Air India Airlines

Who doesn’t remember the official mascot of Air India “Maharaja” beckoning one and all onto the ‘palace in the sky’? It is one of the most popular icons of contemporary India and identifies heavily with Air India, the only state owned and flag carrier airline of India. The roots of Air India lie in the pre independence Tata airlines, which was later bought over by the Government and rechristened as Air India international. Set up exclusively to take care of international flights, upon merger with Indian Airlines and its fully owned subsidiary, Alliance Air, since 27th February, 2011; Air India has entered the domestic sector as well. Together Air India (for domestic), Air India Cargo, Air India Express (for international) and Air India Regional form the Air India Limited.

Air India Express is the airline's international low-cost subsidiary which was established in 2005. Air India Express aircrafts will have single class economy with a capacity of around 180 seats. The corporate office of Air India is at Indian Airlines house in the parliament street of New Delhi with two domestic hubs in Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi; a third hub at the Dubai International Airport in plans. With 95 in-service aircrafts, Air India boasts of a relatively young fleet of 31 Boeing Aircrafts and 64 Airbus aircrafts. Air India Express operates a fleet of Next Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Air India also offers full services such as in-flight entertainment, complimentary meal and champagne (for first class) along with a frequent flyer programme. Despite tough competition in the domestic sector from low cost carriers like Spiceject, IndiGo, GoAir and JetAirways and financial upheaval since merger with Indian Airlines; Air India has been consistently improving its performance, experiencing a jump of more than 6% market share in the year 2012 claiming a big chunk of 20.8% of the market. Air India is the proud winner of multiple noteworthy awards over the years such as Best CSR Initiative (2010), The Mercury Award (1994 and 2003) Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Award (2010); Air India is also one of the few airlines recognized for its environment and ozone friendly processes with the Montreal Protocol Public Awareness Award by the UN (2010).
