Who doesn’t remember the official mascot of Air India “Maharaja” beckoning one and all onto the ‘palace in the sky’? It is one of the most popular icons of contemporary India and identifies heavily with Air India, the only state owned and flag carrier airline of India. The roots of Air India lie in the pre independence Tata airlines, which was later bought over by the Government and rechristened as Air India international. Set up exclusively to take care of international flights, upon merger with Indian Airlines and its fully owned subsidiary, Alliance Air, since 27th February, 2011; Air India has entered the domestic sector as well. Together Air India (for domestic), Air India Cargo, Air India Express (for international) and Air India Regional form the Air India Limited.
Air India Express is the airline's international low-cost subsidiary which was established in 2005. Air India Express aircrafts will have single class economy with a capacity of around 180 seats. The corporate office of Air India is at Indian Airlines house in the parliament street of New Delhi with two domestic hubs in Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi; a third hub at the Dubai International Airport in plans. With 95 in-service aircrafts, Air India boasts of a relatively young fleet of 31 Boeing Aircrafts and 64 Airbus aircrafts. Air India Express operates a fleet of Next Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Air India serves 53 domestic destinations and 77 international destinations with both short and long haul routes to 19 countries across Asia, Europe and North America. Air India also offers full services such as in-flight entertainment, complimentary meal and champagne (for first class) along with a frequent flyer programme. Despite tough competition in the domestic sector from low cost carriers like Spiceject, IndiGo, GoAir and JetAirways and financial upheaval since merger with Indian Airlines; Air India has been consistently improving its performance, experiencing a jump of more than 6% market share in the year 2012 claiming a big chunk of 20.8% of the market. How to Check-in
For domestic as well as international travelers, check-in counter opens 4 hours before the flight schedule and closes 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time of flight. At the time of check-in, a printout of the itinerary or SMS confirming the flight details must be produced along with a valid photo ID proof. Air India also offers the facility of online check in facility 36 hours to 4 hours prior to the scheduled flight.
Baggage Allowances and Fees
Free checked baggage weight limits for domestic flights are 40kg for first class and executive class, 30 kg for economy class and 10kg for infants. For international flights baggage allowance is 40kg for first class, 30kg for executive class and 20kg for economy class. These rates further vary for flights to US and Canada. Excess baggage charges at the check-in counter are 1.5% of the highest normal direct one-way economy class fare for every additional kilo for domestic travel and for international travel; the charges vary as per the destination countries. In flight baggage weight allowance is that of 8 kg per passenger. Prohibited items include corrosives, aerosols, explosives, inflammable liquids or solids, sharp instruments, fish, poisons or biohazard substances.

Air India charges convenience fees of INR 100 on booking of flight tickets from online portals or from Air India website. At a time online bookings can be made for only 9 passengers. Purchase of flight ticket from the check-in counters at airports is free of cost.
