Operating scheduled services to 42 destinations in 23 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, Gulf Air, is the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The headquarters of the airline is in Muharraq, which is adjacent to Bahrain airport and the main hub of the airline is Bahrain airport. The airline’s frequent flyer program is called ‘Falcon Flyer’. Gulf Air is among the oldest air carrier in the Middle East.

History

Founded in the year 1950, the airline was then known as Gulf Aviation by British pilot and entrepreneur, Freddie Bosworth. The airline was then used as an air taxi to Doha and Dhahran from Bahrain. The company was expanded and registered Gulf Aviation Company Limited as a private shareholding company on 24th March 1940. In October 1951, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) became a major shareholder in Gulf Aviation with holding a stake of 22% through the BOAC subsidiary company BOAC Associated Companies. The airline came under the ownership of Kingdom of Bahrain in the year 1973.

Fleet

Currently the airline owns a fleet of 16 Airbus A320-200, 6 Airbus A321-200 and 6 Airbus A330-200. Orders of 16 Boeing 787-8 and Bombardier CS 100 have been place, the delivery of which will start from 2018 onwards. Orders for 16 Airbus A32neo is also underway and the expected delivery is towards the end of this decade.

Gulf Air flies to 42 international destinations in 23 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe from its hub at Bahrain International Airport. The airport has code share agreement with American Airline, Cyprus Airways, EgyptAir, Gaurda Indonesia, KLM, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Safi Airways, Saudia, Thai Airway International and Yemenia.
