The major airline carrier of Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines is an IOSA certified airline. Headquartered in Katunayake, SriLankan Airlines operates hubs at Colombo, and Mattala, and has a strong presence in South Asia, Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia markets. In the year 2014, it became a member of the Oneworld Alliance. Presently, the airline provides service in 92 destinations across 44 countries.SriLankan is the South Asia's first and only airline to have onboard wifi connectivity. 

History

Founded in the year 1947, it was then known as Air Ceylon. The name was changed to Air Lanka after the termination of Air Ceylon in the year 1978. In the year 1998 it was rebranded as SriLankan Airline and today is it one of the largest airlines in South Asia with a safety rating of 7/7. Before becoming the member of Oneworld Alliance, SriLankan Airlines was part of Emirates which held 43.63% of the airline’s stake. The affiliation ended in the year 2010.

Fleet

SriLankan Airline has a fleet size of 25 airbuses. The first Airbus was acquired in the year 1992 and it was an A320-200 airbus. The airline was the first in Asia to use the A340, which are aircrafts used in high density flights to Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe. The average age of the aircraft is 10.8 years. The plan of boosting its existing fleet by another 35 airbus is underway, the delivery of which began in the year 2013 onwards. In April 2013, SriLankan Airline won government approval to acquire four Airbus A350-900 and seven A330-300 aircraft and deliveries started from October 2014. Further 2017 onwards; three Airbus A350-900s will be leased by the airline.

Routes and Destinations

SriLankan Airline currently operates 258 weekly flights to 33 destinations in 20 countries, covering the main cities of the Europe, Middle East, India, South East Asia and the Far East. The airline serves codeshares with 15 countries and is the largest international carrier serving Maldives (more than 30 flights weekly between Colombo and Male). Bandaranaike International Airport is the biggest hub and serves all of the airline's destinations.

How to Check-in

At present SriLankan Airlines offers 3 options of check-in – Counter check-in, mobile check-in and web check-in. Passengers can check-in between 2 to 24 hours before the time of departure via either of the option. Check-in deadlines are different at every airport and it is recommend that guests keep themselves informed about these Check-in deadlines and honour them. All the check-in counters close 1 hour prior to flight departure.

Baggage and Allowance

At SriLankan Airline the maximum weight per piece of luggage should not exceed 32 kg. The weight of free baggage allowance is subject to the airline conditions and limitations. Passengers travelling in business class can carry 2 hand luggage the size of which should not exceed 18"x14"x6" and 7 kg of weight. In economy class, only 1 piece of hand luggage, weighing not more than 7 kg, is permitted.

Seating

Passengers travelling on SriLankan Airlines can pre book their tickets while booking their flights online, at a nominal cost. The seats in economy class as light blue in colour and are equipped with individual video player with 18 movies and 22 radio channels. The seats in business class are fully flat bed seat offers a 19.5 inches wide seat that can be reclined into a 180 degree 79 inches long bed. Each seat has a 15 inch personal IFE system. The new fleets at SriLankan Airlines have the option of ‘Satcom Satellite phone’ that allows a passenger to call anyone in another seat free of charge. Entertainment options like movies in many languages, programmes for children and games like puzzles and classic board games are available for children. Hot meals are available on the flight and guest can pre book their meals as well while booking their tickets.

Booking Fee

The flight booking at SriLankan Airlines can be made 24 hours to 340 days prior to departure time via online booking facility. Date changes will be subject to fare conditions, applicable procedures, local fees, fare differences, processing charges (if applicable) and can be done at the nearest SriLankan Airlines office or 24 x 7 global contact centre. Refund as well as cancellation of ticket attract additional fee and is subject to the Airlines policy. Please note that refund is not permitted in case of restricted ticket or promotional fares.
