Dubai International Airport

The Dubai international airport is a major airline hub in the Middle East. Located in the Al Garhoud district around 4.6 km from the city, Dubai airport is the base of Dubai's international airlines, Emirates, FlyDubai and Emirates SkyCargo. Spreading on an area of 8,500 acres, the airport reported a record of 66 million passenger movements in the year 2013, making it the 7th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and 2nd busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic. The 2.44 million tons of cargo which was handled by the airport in the year 2013 made it the 5th busiest cargo airport in the world. The airport began its operation in the year 1937 and till date has served more than 402 million passengers and handles more than 3.87 million aircrafts.

There are three terminals at the Dubai airport which has the capacity of handling 80 million passengers annually. The 3rd terminal is the largest in the world in terms of floor space. More than 7,000 flights operated by 140 airlines to over 230 destinations across every continent except Antartica, fly from all the terminals at Dubai. The 1st and 3rd terminal at the airport serves 95% of the international flights while the 2nd terminal is for budget passengers, regional flights and those travelling to Persian Gulf and sub-continent region.

Most of the passengers using the Dubai International airport are international in nature; hence, all the terminals are equipped with immigration processing counters and security scanning. Food and beverage counters, departure halls, first class & business class lounge, 5 star hotel, duty free shopping facility, prayer room, medical centre and number of facilities are available for the passengers. The airport is well connected to all parts of the city via metro, buses and taxi.

Al Maktoum International Airport – Dubai World Central

A major airport located in Jebel Ali, around 37 km south west of Dubai, the Al Maktoum International airport which is also known as Dubai World Central is world’s first completely integrated logistics platform in a single free economic zone. Often referred to as the ‘World’s first purpose-built aerotropolis’, the airport has an annual capacity of holding 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight.

Spreading on an area of 55,000 acres of land, the Al Maktoum airport houses a commercial, residential and logistic complex in its premise along with a luxurious golf course and numerous high end hotels in its vicinity. The first runway of the airport was opened on 27th June 2010 with operations of only the cargo flights. The airport received its first passenger flight on 28th February 2011. The airport is planned to have five parallel runways 4,900 m each and will have a large passenger complex in the middle. Extended asphalted pathways will allow aircraft to by-pass other taxiways and runways without hindering any aircraft movement. Upon the completion, this airport will become the world’s second largest airport, the first being Dammam airport in Saudi Arabia.

The airport opened for public only on 26th October 2013 and has three passenger terminals and 16 cargo terminals. Five parallel runways, two luxury facilities – one dedicated to airlines of Emirates group and the other to low cost airlines, multiple concourses, executive & royal jet centres, hotels, shopping malls, support facilities, parking space of 1,00,000 are among the facilities available here.
