Samui International Airport also, Koh Samui Airport is a private airport. It is on the Koh Samui Island, Thailand. This airport is about 2km north of Bangkok city and Chaweng Island. Bangkok Airways built the airport. Bangkok Airways is the largest privately owned airline in the country. Samui Airport is an extra ordinary airport. It has no indoor area except the gift shop. It is the main hub of Bangkok airlines.

The airport is the sixth busiest in Thailand. It handles over one million passengers yearly. Samui Airport has two terminals - domestic and international terminals. The international terminal is approximately 50 meters north of the domestic terminal. Bangkok Airways runs most flights from the island. In February 2008, Thai Airways began flights to the airport.  

Samui airport is the most beautiful and the best designed airport in the world. It has attractive and green natural surroundings. The airport is unique in many ways. First, it has no indoor area. Bangkok Airways began construction of the airport in 1982. Bangkok Airways opened the airport officially in April 1989. This airport was the idea of one Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, who is the CEO and president of Bangkok Airways. He wanted to establish a new airport for the island.

He called for help from Habita Company. The company designed the airport. The CEO’s vision became a reality in 1982 when construction began. The airport officially opened seven years later in 1989. It had a 1,800 meters runway at the time. The total area of the airport was 800,000 square meters.

Upgrading of Samui Airport began in 1997. The upgrade added the Immigrant facilities, customs services, new passenger terminal and direct flight route.



Many airline fleets use Samui international airport. Some of the fleets that use the airport are the Boeing 787 and Airbuses. The airlines that operate at the airport include the Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airline, Firefly, Lucky Air, Silk Air, and Thai Airways International.

·         The airport won Tropical Building in Thailand Energy Awards, in 2010 and 2011.

·         Samui Airport the first runner-up of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practice for Energy Efficient Buildings in Tropical Building category from ASEAN Energy Awards 2011. ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) organized the awards.

Routes and destinations

The airport connects several routes and destinations. The main destinations include Pattaya-U-Tapao, Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. These destinations are domestic. The international destinations include the Singapore,Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Guangzhou, Penang, Kunming, and Subang.

How to check in

You can check-in in three ways. There is the use of mobile app to check in, physical check in, and online check in. Different airlines prefer different methods to check in. Mobile-app check in is where the traveller uses a mobile app on a Smartphone to check in. For online check in, the traveller uses his or her computer via internet. The physical check in is where the passenger checks in physically at the airport.

Baggage and allowance

The baggage and allowance depends on the airline that the passenger uses. However, the majority of the airlines have the limit baggage of 40 kilograms per person. There is an allowance to items like a laptops and children carriers.


Different airlines have different seating. Most airlines like the Bangkok airways and China Southern airline charge more on seats near the exit. The traveller can book his or her seat online. Many airlines at the airport provides for this option. This can enable the passenger to book seats for his or her family. Bangkok Airways has a maximum seat book of up to seven passengers. These passengers include children.

Booking fee

Booking fee is different for all airlines at the airport. Booking will depend on a passenger’s preference. This is because there are two classes that exist among airlines. It will cost more to book for a business class flight than an economic flight. The business class has several extra privileges. There is also a low cost flight at the airport.
