Flights from Barcelona

Barcelona Airport – also known as Aeroport del Prat – is one of the busiest airports in Europe and serves the city of Barcelona, capital of Catalonia. Although there are multiple airports serving Catalonia, Barcelona Airport is considered one of the most convenient as it is only 14km away from the city. In 2012, Barcelona Airport was ranked the 32nd busiest airport in the world, handling more than 30 million passengers in that year alone. The airport’s most active route – named “Air Bridge” – is the flight connecting Barcelona to Madrid, as it is used dozens of times a week. Though the airport’s main connections are to European cities, flights from Barcelona Airport also go to the Americas, North Africa and Asiatic Southeast.

Where to go from Barcelona

The city of Barcelona is a tourist favourite, full of diverse sights, sounds and attractions. But if you’ve seen all there is to see in the city and want to see more of Spain, you can take the “Air Bridge” over to Madrid, Spain’s capital, from Barcelona Airport. Although only an hour and a half away from Barcelona (by flight), the uniqueness of the capital city ensures a different experience altogether. For a true Spanish experience head over to La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas del Espíritu Santo, a mouthful of a name for a bullring. There, you’ll see why Madrid is the home of bullfighting in Spain. Be warned, though, bullfights are not for the faint of heart.

But if you’re looking for a picturesque sandy beach to lie upon while soaking in the sun, you can grab a quick flight over to the Girona-Costa Brava Airport in Spain. Enjoy the scenic walled river city that is Girona, and subsequently make your way over to the famous coastal region of Costa Brava, known for its many beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters and amazing coastal scenery.

Otherwise, Málaga is also a great place for a short getaway. Don’t miss the imposing Castillo de Gibralfaro, ruins of a castle perched on top of a hill. It was built by an 8th century Cordoban emir and overlooks the city, providing some magnificent views. Lazily meander through windy paths in gardened terraces and be awed by the well-preserved fortress while admiring the stunning scenery from above.

Have had one tapas too many? A short flight over to Rome, Italy, from Barcelona Airport will get you authentic Italian pasta in less than 2 hours. Go from seeing bullfights to admiring the massive Colosseum where ancient gladiators used to battle to the death. Considered the symbol of the eternal city, the Colosseum is an imposing 189 metres long, 156 metres wide and stands almost 50 metres tall. After spending a sufficient amount of time being awed by the arena and imagining yourself as a gladiator, mosey over to the Trevi Fountain, one of the most photographed sites in Rome. The sparkling water of the fountain originates from one of the oldest Roman aqueducts, the ‘Acqua Virgine’, and dashes over the statue of Neptune, God of the sea, with his chariot drawn by sea horses. Don’t forget to toss a coin into the fountain before leaving! Legend has it that if you toss a coin in the Trevi, you will one day return to the eternal city.

For a bit of Asian flavour, there are also flights from El Prat to Tokyo’s Narita Airport. The capital city of Japan, Tokyo, sports clean, well-organised streets and perhaps the most polite population in the world. See the imposing Tokyo tower, have some authentic sushi and ramen noodles, and be awed by the beautiful manners of almost every Japanese person you meet.

Otherwise, Toronto – Canada’s largest city and also one of the largest in North America – awaits. Toronto is home to a diverse population and has consistently been ranked one of the most liveable cities in the world. Boasting beautiful sand and cobble beaches, waterfront parks, galleries full of contemporary and ancient art as well as imposing architecture in the form of world-famous building, the CN Tower, there is much to do and see in this city.

From Barcelona Airport, the sky is the limit when it comes to places you can go to.
