What to see and do

Start your day at the Alun-Alun Puputan, the key point of orientation for the whole city. If you ever get lost in the city, find your way back to this point. Get your cameras ready to start snapping at the statue of the four-faced, eight-armed Catur Mukha statue here. Just east of the statue lies the Bali Museum. Comprising charming grounds and architecture, this museum is enveloped by lush, landscaped gardens. Inside, the art on display presents a remarkable survey of Balinese culture and heritage from past and living masters. The main pavilion also has a great collection of ancient treasures and artefacts.

Immerse yourself in the richness of Balinese culture by hopping between ancient temples and exploring the historic structures. Pay a visit to the Palace of Satria and the Royal Temples, just a stone’s throw away. Spend the day admiring the beautifully ornate carvings on the temples and palace here. Carry on by heading to the Pura Agung Jagatnata which is a temple dedicated to the supreme Sanghyang Widi Wasa. Step back in time to the 14th century at the ancient temple of Pura Maospahit.

Those genuinely interested in art should explore the spectacular Taman Wedhi Cultural Centre. This museum covers the history and essence of Balinese art. You are bound to enjoy the paintings and sculptures of contemporary Balinese art here. Do visit the official tourism office to find out when authentic Balinese dance and orchestra performances are held here. The Taman Budaya is another must-visit place for its traditional Balinese architecture and amazing performances.

Do visit Denpasar during the Bali Arts Festival for a full month of daily dance performances, handicraft exhibitions and other related cultural activities. It is a month- long revelry that you will perhaps not experience elsewhere in the world. Watch as the Balinese performers bring their traditional culture alive with tremendous pride!

Denpasar is bustling and busy by day and night, with a high concentration of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. This city is ideal for strolling, bargain hunting and of course recuperating from the day’s activities. Visitors to this city would be able to find a multitude of souvenir items and handicraft at the different shops at the traditional Kumbasari market.

Getting Around Within the City

Travellers should explore the city on foot since most of the attractions are clustered together. Given the chaotic traffic conditions, you might want to avoid taking a taxi or hiring a car. Avoid taking the bemos as the routes can be rather complicated.
