Aero Airlines, also known as Aero is one of the most popular state controlled Nigerian aviation series. Established in 1959, the company provides helicopter services, domestic fixed wing services as well as international scheduled passenger services. Its hub is based at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Apart from offering scheduled flight services, the airline company also provides third party aircraft operations for the oil and gas industry of Nigeria (10th largest in the world) and special air charter facilities. The airline company is wholly owned by the Ibru family of Nigeria and has two divisions. The Aero Nigeria division handles passenger services for domestic and Western Africa international routes while the Rotary Wing hands the oil and gas, along with the helicopter services of the country. Destinations of Ghana, among other regions are served by the company.


Following aircrafts are owned by Aero Airlines along with De Havilland Dash 8 Q200-400 Series of four aircrafts.

Boeing 737-400

The narrow body jetliners, Boeing 737-400 are perfect for closer or short-haul travel. They come with short to medium range body and are primarily used for commercial purposes. The 400 variant of this aircraft directly competes with the Airbus A320 and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 models. It stretches to another 10 feet in comparison to the predecessor 300 and has a capacity of carrying 168 passengers for a domestic or closer international flight. The aircraft is also available in 400F model, which is a converted cargo aircraft. It is used without winglets and doesn’t have a fixed combination of half passenger and half-freight services.

Boeing 737-500

The customer demands for a direct replacement for 737-200 led to the development of the 500 counterpart. The Boeing Classic 737-500 was designed with several improvements over the predecessors, making it perfect for short and medium haul travel purposes. It is more economical than the 300 version and even features glass or older styled mechanical cockpit arrangements. The classic model features fewer passenger versions, is more economical and more comfortable. It is also 1 feet and 7 inches longer than the 200 model.

The well controlled Aero Contractors Company of Nigeria Limited operates domestic and international scheduled passenger services, air charter and third party aircraft operations. One its divisions also provide helicopter services. The former division is called Aero Nigeria while the latter is known as Rotary Wing, which offers it services mainly in support of Nigeria's extensive oil and gas industry.


With a fleet of 17 aircrafts, the airline operates flights to 13 destinations in Ghana and Nigeria. Some of its prime destinations include, Accra, Abuja, Asaba, Calabar, Enuga, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Sokoto etc. Its main hub is at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria, which is also its headquarters.
