Alitalia – Where the journey meets the destination

The flag carrier of Italy, Alitalia is one of the big players in the European airline sector. The airline serves over 100 destinations in 44 countries, and has its main hub in Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, in Rome. Linate Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport, both in Milan is the secondary base. Alitalia is a part of the Transatlantic Joint Venture (along with Delta, Air France, and KLM) and is the world’s 19th largest airline. Alitalia is well known for its training courses, which cover flight, ground, and maintenance staff. They even offer a course for passengers who are afraid to fly: Voglia di Volare, which is aimed at people who feel anxious about boarding a plane, whether they’re first time fliers or experienced travellers who have suddenly been overcome by fear.  Catania-Fontanarossa Airport and Pisa International Airport are the airline’s focus cities. Alitalia has been in the SkyTeam alliance since 2009.


Founded in the year 12 March 1999, the airline was then known as Trattamenti Termici Solbiate s.r.l. The airline has evolved after many mergers; recent being with Air One and the airline was re-launched in 2008 as Alitalia. In June 2014, the Abu Dhabi-based UAE national airline Etihad Airways announced it was taking a 49% stake in Alitalia.


Alitalia has one of the most modern fleets in Europe, after a huge upgrade project took place between 2010 and 2014. Currently the fleet includes a mix of 98 Airbus and Boeing aircrafts with an average age of 8.1 years. In January 2015, with the new strategic plan focused on long haul, the airline announced that 7 wide-bodies (that now seems to be 3 A330-200, 2 B777-200ER, 3 B777-300ER) will join in the fleet starting from May 2015. Alitalia are an extremely punctual airline, with over 90% of their flights arriving and departing on time during 2013.

Routes and Destination

Currently the airline Alitalia serves 103 destinations and has a codeshare agreement with 335 airlines. Alitalia has since arranged code-share agreements with SkyTeam members.
