Bulgaria Air Flights

The national flag carrier of Bulgaria, Bulgaria Airlines is owned by Chimimport Inc. and has its headquarters at Sofia Airport in Sofia. Bourgas Airport and Varna Airport are the focus cities for Bulgaria Air. Balkan Hemus Group EAD is the parent company of the airline and the airline currently has 3 lounges - Vitosha Lounge Sofia, Business Lounge Sofia and VIP Lounge Sofia. Established in November 2002, the airline began operations on 4th December 2002 and the present fleet of the airline has 13 aircrafts including 5 Airbus, 2 Boeing, 1 BAe 146-200, 1 Avro RJO and 4 Embraer E-190. Currently the airline flies to 26 destinations across the globe and recorded 1,185,430 passenger movements in the year 2008.

Bulgaria Air was established in the year 2002 to succeed the Bulkan Bulgarian Airlines. It was called as Balkan Air Tour during its inception; however the name was soon changes to Bulgarian Air. In the year 2006, the airline was privatized and was bought by Hemus Air which paid €6.6m with a promise to invest a further €86m over the next five years. The airline became the full member of the International Air Transport Association on 20th November 2002. It currently operates 22 routes from Sofia Airport along with charter flights to more than 80 destinations across Europe, Asia and Africa. The airline offers the frequent flyer program called ‘Fly More’ which has 3 levels of membership.

How to Check – in

Passengers travelling with Bulgaria Airlines can avail multiple options of check-in. Passengers can do online check-in 24 hours before departure and strictly closes 2 hours before departure of the flight. By online check-in, passengers can print their boarding pass but need to report at the airport at least 40 minutes before schedule departure of the flight. However, online check-in services are available only for passengers departing from Sofia, Burgas, London, Varna, Zurich, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna. Counter check-in option too is available for passengers taking Bulgaria Air. Counter generally open 2 hours before departure of international flight and 1 hour before departure of domestic flight.

Baggage Allowance and Fee

If you are travelling in economy class you are entitled to 1 piece of checked baggage not exceeding 23 kg. Passengers in business class can carry 2 pieces of baggage, both of which should not weigh more than 23 kg. Depending upon the kind of membership you hold with the airline, the limit may vary. As hand baggage, passengers are not allowed to carry 1 bag not weighing more than 10 kg along with a small personal bag. If you are travelling with excess luggage, passengers will be charged anywhere between EUR20 to EUR50 per bag for those in domestic flight and between EUR50 to EUR100 for those in international flight.


Option of seat selection is offered to passengers travelling from Sofia, Varna, Burgas, London (Heathrow and Gatwick), Zurich, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna. Passengers travelling from these destinations can pre select the seat of their choice during online check-in. For those travelling from other destinations, they can place a request for their preferred seat during the counter check-in process. Please note that during the counter check-in, seats are allotted on first come first serve basis and are subject to availability. Therefore passengers are advised to reach the airport before time and place a request for their preferred seat at the counter.

Booking Fee

If you are planning to book your flight ticket on Bulgaria Air, then there are multiple ways to do it. Passengers can book their ticket on the website of the airline by paying a small service charge. Option of advanced reservation is available with Bulgaria Air without any surcharge. Tickets can be purchased either over the phone or in person at any of Bulgaria Air’s offices or with the tourist agent. Tickets can also be bought from the airline counter at the airport, without any extra charges. Cancellation or modification of flight tickets is permissible and passengers should call the airline directly in such instances.

In Flight Services

The airline has its own in-flight magazine called Bulgaria on Air and is among the most widely read business and lifestyle magazine. The airline operated a luxury business jet which has spacious compartment with 26 armchairs and other amenities, satellite phones, LCD displays and audio systems. The regular flights of the airline are equipped with comfortable reclining seats with enough leg space and are offered light food, depending on the hour of the day. Nonalcoholic drink, low alcoholic drink, tea and coffee are also offered. Passengers in business class enjoy facilities like welcome drink already before takeoff, cooked meal and wide choice of food and beverages.
