Alor Setar (AOR) Airport – Malaysia’s Most Delightful

Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, unofficially known as Alor Setar Airport is the primary airport serving Alor Setar, a city in Kedah state of Malaysia.

A public cum military airport, it is at an elevation of 5 meters above sea level and at a distance of 15 km from the main city. The airport is owned by Government of Malaysia and operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. At present, the airport has a single asphalt runway measuring 2,745 meters in length. The training division of Royal Malaysian Air Force is also located at the airport and the same runway is used by them. At the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport 660,264 passenger, 17,365 aircraft and 230 tons of cargo movements were recorded in the year 2014. The airport currently has 2 terminals which has a joint capacity of handling up to 800,000 passengers per annum.


The airport has been operational for a few decades now and has been constantly renovated and upgraded to accommodate the growing number of passengers. In the year 2006, the airport got a new terminal with a capacity of handling Airbus 330 operations and the runway was extended from 1,963 m to 2,745 m.


At present the airport is base for AirAsia, Firefly, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air and Sriwijaya Air which operates regular direct flights to and from the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport.


The newly built Sultan Abdul Halim Airportboasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure and best of facilities for its passengers, but till now it has not received any awards or recognition.

Routes and Destinations

At present the Sultan Abdul Halim Airportis directly connected only to Kuala Lampur. Schedule passenger flights will begin operating to Medan in Indonesia from 27th August, 2015. While there are no commercial flights operating from the airport, but during the hajj season, special flights are available for Muslim pilgrims journeying to Saudi Arabia.

How to Check-in

The airline flying from Sultan Abdul Halim Airport offer convenient options of check-in. online check-in is available with most of the airlines and this can be done on the website of the airline, 24 hours prior to departure. Option of mobile check-in can also be availed and open from 48 hours and up to 60 minutes before departure. Once you do online check-in or mobile check-in, you can print your boarding pass and head straight to the security check at the airport. Self-service check-in option is not available with all the airlines; hence it is advisable that you get information on the same before leaving for airport. Depending upon the airline, class of travel and destination of travel, passengers are allowed to check-in anywhere between 30 kg to 50 kg of baggage and can carry 7 kg of luggage as cabin baggage. Please note that this i just an indicative limit and can increase or decrease based on the policy of the airline. Charges will be levied in case of excess baggage and the same can be paid at the airport. Ask your airline if they have provision of pre booking of excess luggage online, at a subsidized rate.
