Located about 30 km towards the southeast of Abu Dhabi city, Abu Dhabi International Airport is UAE’s second biggest airport, after Dubai International Airport. The airport sprawls over an area of 60 sq kilometers and is under the operation of Abu Dhabi Airports Company. In the past few years, a sharp rise in the passenger traffic as well as aircraft movements has been recorded. It handled more than 14 million passengers flying to 85 destinations across the world in the year 2012 and more than 53 airlines operate at this airport.

Residing at an elevation of 27 m above mean sea level, Abu Dhabi International Airport comprises of two parallel runways in the directions - 13R/31L and 13L/31 R and both measures same length and width (4,260 m × 60 m). It is the main centre for UAE’s second largest air carrier, Etihad Airways and Rotana Jet.

The expansion and development work is undergoing at the airport and its completion is due in 2017. This expansion project includes construction of a new passenger terminal which will be capable of hosting more than 20 million travelers per annum, along with a new third runway, a new tower and enhancement of cargo facilities.

Terminals– There are three operational passenger terminals at the airport – Terminal 1 (including Terminal 1A & Terminal 1B), Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

Revamped in 2011, Terminal 1 features a total of 54 check-in counters and equipped with quick and efficient baggage processing systems, immigration and passport control booths, along with two gates for departures and a spacious departure lounge. Various duty free as well as retail stores offering a range of goods are also found in the terminal.

Covering 12,000 sq meters of area, Terminal 2, which started its operation in 2005 consists of a dedicated first and business standard lounge. There are 18 check-in counters, 20 arrival as well as 8 departure passport booths, along with various passenger services are available at this terminal. It offers service to 12 airlines.

Opened in 2009, Terminal 3 sprawling on an area of 75,000 sq meters is predominately utilized by Etihad Airways and has passenger handling capacity of more than seven million a year. The terminal boasts of 10 new gates, two of which are compatible of assisting Airbus A380 and has 20 premium check-in counters. Among many services offered at the terminal include restaurants, cafes and duty free stores.

Abu Dhabi International Airport is situated around 73 km from Al Maktoum International Airport, which is also the closest international airport linking to the rest of the globe. Some of the nearest airports to Abu Dhabi are also Abu Dhabu Bateen airport, M’Bahiakro airport and Al Ain airport.
