The Bahrain International airport is located at a distance of 7 km from Bahrain city in Muharraq, which is an island on the northern tip of Bahrain. The airport was once the primary hub for the now defunct Bahrain air and presently serves as a primary hub for Gulf Air. In 2010, Bahrain Airport was named as the winner of the Best Airport in the Middle East Award at the Skytrax 2010 World Airport Awards. After the expansion and refurbishment plan launched in 2006, the airport has been upgraded with multi story car parking, numerous retail outlets, a new perimeter fence and upgraded security systems.


The airport at Bahrain was opened in the year 1932 when the first commercial flight from London to Delhi, was landed here. This scheduled service established Bahrain as the Persian Gulf’s first international airport. The airport has seen extensive renovation multiple times and the present day terminal was inaugurated in 1994. The airport reports annual passenger movements of 77, 93,527 and 1, 02,068 aircraft movements. Work on the expansion of the airport began in June 2011 and is expected to be completed by June 2015. Once the expansion is completed, the passenger capacity of airport will increase to 27 million a year and the cargo capacity will increase from 350,000 cubic meters to 1.5 million cubic meters.
