Colombia’s Beating heart via Bogota (BOG) Airport


The Colombian International Airport of Bogata is also renowned as the El Dorado International Airport. It is location in the heart of Bogota city. In the whole Latin America, BOG Airport is among the largest cargo airport and boasts second place in terms of the movement of passengers. The cargo amassed in 2013 was recorded in 2013 was 622,145 metric tons and 25 million passengers in the same year.  Hence, it is the country’s largest facilitating airport and acts as the major domestic and international gateway.


Bogata Airport handles about half of the entire air traffic within the country. It boasts a large landing field of nearly 7 km, third amongst all over the world. The location of the airport is situated 15 km westward of the city centre. For the access to downtown several regular buses provide services linking with the TransMilenio system.    


El Dorado Airport is the major flight hub for Aviance Airlines and Copa Airlines. The airport is currently operational under Operadora Aeroportuaria Internacional and the Swiss Flughafen Zurich AG.



General Gustavo Rojas approved the blueprint of the airport’s passenger terminal. However, the construction began not until 1955 and air service began only at the end of the year 1959. The event saw the replacement of the interim terminal and unification of other sections of the exclusive new airport then.

The new terminal featured numerous taxiways, platform maintenance, a cellar, Mezzanine areas, parking spots, passenger halls and other facilities. The terminal’s second floor featured area of departure with executive waiting lounges and restaurants while the third floor consisted of airline offices and other services related to airport operations. The fourth floor and fifth consisted of administrative offices. Likewise, the other service and dependencies followed through the tenth floor.

Bogata (BOA) Airport achieved a milestone of three million passengers served and about 5 million luggage units processed during the fiscal year of 1973. The aviation industry saw the boom in the growth of both international and domestic passengers. Keeping the growth in mind BOA Airport planned a construction of new runway. In 1981, the construction responsibility was awarded to Avianca to meet the flight demands from Bogata towar Medellin, New York, Cali and Miami.     

The proposed second runway was inaugurated in the year 1998. In recent years, upgrade of the baggage claim section has been developed and the northern sector and southern sector has been expanded. The western section towards the departure lounges have also been to expanded a great extent. More shops and restaurants have also been added.







Several aircrafts manage flights from the international airport of Bogata. They serve passengers to abundant destinations throughout the globe. A number of these fleets include: Aerolineas, Aero Mexico, Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, Avianca, Conviasa, Copa Airlines, Delta Air lines, Easyfly, Iberia, Interjet, Jetblue airways, Lufthansa, Satena, Spirit Airlines, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Viva Colombia.



During its operational years, it has gained credit as the most influential airport in Colombia as well as of Latin America. Some of the awards are:

How to check-in

Passengers are able to check-in through online method, smart phones or at airport’s counter. The airport features counters for check in reasons. Most of the check-in desks are handled by the carrier’s security personnel. Check-in is a usual process and therefore no need to be nervous at all. The airlines have different regulations that inform passengers to check-in by precise times previous to flight’s departure. The duration can be 15 minutes to 4 hours.
