History

The Buffalo airport was founded in 1926 and is one of the oldest airports. The first passenger flight came in 1927. A new terminal building was started in 1938 with a v-shaped terminal and a cylindrical tower and was finished in1939. A new apron was made later and then the new parkways and roads were built in 1940s and 1950s. To meet the growing air traffic the gates were increased to 11 and the floor area tripled in 1955. A new concourse for American Airlines, a new control tower were added to the airport along with the renovation of the old terminal in 1961 and 10 years later a new west terminal was formed with 9 more gates.

The east terminal was again expanded and ticket counters were added in it in 1977 and then in 1982 two more gates were added to the west terminal. In 1991 the authorities decided to build a new terminal from scratch and the construction began in 1995. The new terminal had 15 gates initially and ten more gates were added in 2001 while the old building was demolished to add space for the new building. The two runways were extended in 2006.

Southwest airlines were the busiest company at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and were handling 32 percent of the outbound flights. Delta airlines were second followed by JetBlue.
