The east terminal was again expanded and ticket counters were added in it in 1977 and then in 1982 two more gates were added to the west terminal. In 1991 the authorities decided to build a new terminal from scratch and the construction began in 1995. The new terminal had 15 gates initially and ten more gates were added in 2001 while the old building was demolished to add space for the new building. The two runways were extended in 2006.

Southwest airlines were the busiest company at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and were handling 32 percent of the outbound flights. Delta airlines were second followed by JetBlue.
