Conakry International Airport – The Way to Explore West Africa

The Conakry Airport, which is formally known as Conakry International Airport and Gbessia International Airport, serves the capital of West African Republic of Republic of Guinea, Coankry. At an elevation of 22 meters above sea level, this is a public airport having a single asphalt runway measuring 3,330 meters. There are 2 terminals at the airport divided for domestic as well as international travellers. The airport handled 248,248 passenger movements in the year 2009 making it one of the most popular airports in the region. Conakry is a beautiful destination in West Africa and serves as the economic, financial and cultural center of Guinea. There are numerous gardens, monuments, palaces and religious destinations which attract tourists to Conakry from all over the world.


The airport has been used by the Soviet Naval Aviation as staging base for Atlantic maritime reconnaissance patrols in 1970's. The airport also served as main base for most of the Guinean air force's aircraft by 1975. Today it is a civil airport which can be only entered upon having a valid Guinean visa and a vaccination card. Please note that all the travellers coming to this airport will have to verify their yellow fever vaccination card before entering. To increase the passenger capacity of the Conakry International Airport to 1 million passengers, the airport has been under renovation since 2009 at the cost of 60 billion GNF. Talks of shifting the current Conakry Airport to Forecariah has been initiated but till now no confirmation has been made by the officials.

The airport is also served by many West African, North African and European airlines.


No awards have been bestowed upon the Conakry International Airport till now for its outstanding contribution towards the civil aviation sector of West Africa.

Some of the major domestic as well as international destinations connected directly to Conakry International Airport are - Abidjan, Paris, Bamako, Dakar, Lomé, Brussels, Nouakchott, Dubai, Casablanca and Istanbul. Once the expansion work is complete the airport officials have planned to expand its air base. The airport resumed flights to the Ibola hit Ivory Coast Airline in October 2014.

How to Check-in

Not all airlines operating from the Conakry International Airport offer the option of online check-in. While it is indeed the most convenient way to check-in, you should better confirm the availability of the same with your airline. If available, online check-in can be done anywhere between 24 hours to 2 hours before the schedule departure of the flight and this service is free. Generally passengers can download their boarding pass soon after online check-in that helps them to skip the long waiting queue at the airport. Counter check-in at the numerous check-in desks available at the airport is another reliable option. Usually counters close 1 hour before departure of domestic flight and 2 hours in case you are travelling to international destination.

Baggage Allowance
