Visiting Thailand through the Chiang Mai CNX Airport
The airport of Chiang Mai is the fourth busiest airport of Thailand. Chiang Mai airport connects to the Northern Thailand and is a vital link for all the tourists. Chiang Mai is the capital city of the Chiang Mai Province. It is located 700 kilometers from Bangkok between the high mountains and has a river flowing in it. It is a popular tourist’s destination which made to the top 25 places to visit in 2014 by tripadvisor.com. The airport is a non smoking facility. There is a Muslim prayer area that opens from 7am to 10pm for praying. The airport being the second largest air hub in Thailand has all the facilities. The restaurants and salad bars can be found at many places. There is a sports bar located on the second floor with snacks bar that serve round the clock. Souvenirs, gift shops, handicrafts, silk crafts, fresh produce, books and magazine stands are also available at the airport
The airport was built in 1921 and was then named as the Suthep Airport. In 2013, 19 airlines served the passengers at Chiang Mai CNX Airport and more than 5.3 passengers traveled from here. The number of flights operated was 43,000 and around 18,000 tons of cargo transported from the CNX airport. In2008 when the Suvarnabhumi Airport was shut down because of the protests, the Chiang Mai airport served as the alternative airport for China Airlines that operated flights from Taipei to Europe. The airport had become a secondary hub for Thai Air Asia on 24th January 2011. The airport is still being expanded and new aprons for larger airplanes are in progress. This will extend the operating hours of the airport to 24 hours around the week. The airport consists of a single building that houses the arrival and the departure terminals for both the international and domestic flights. In 2014 the airport expansion had been planned to expand the domestic departure halls and international arrival halls. The airport sits 316 meters above mean sea level. It has one runway with an asphalt surface. It measures 3,100 meters by 45 meters and is reachable throughout the year.
The CNX airport is the center for Thai Air Asia. Other airlines that function from this airport are Air Asia, Air Bagan, Air China, Bangkok Air, City Airways, Dragonair, Korean Air, Golden Myanmar Airlines, Nok Air, Shandong Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Kan Air, Lao Airlines, and Silk air, Spring Airlines, Thai Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai Smile, Tiger air, Taiwan and V Air.
Chiang Mai airline hasn’t won any awards yet and will have to improvise its operations to become an award deserving airline in the future.

How to Check-in
Check in is the simple procedure where the travelers have to present their tickets at the check in counter and receive their boarding passes. Depending on the items they are carrying, they may also unload their luggage at the counters and then proceed to the security checks and other procedures before they depart for their flights. At the Chiang Mia CNX airports the check-in counters for all flights are located at the south end of the ground floor. The luggage is passed through an X-ray scanner for security concerns. Different airlines have different durations before which the customers must check in at the airport.
The baggage has to be handed to the airline staff when the passengers reach at the airport and check-in at one of their respective counters. The baggage is then shifted to the aircrafts through the baggage belts. The bags are to be deposited on the first floor. Some airlines may charge extra freight for extra baggage. There are total 5 conveyer belts at the airport. 3 belts are dedicated for the bags from the domestic flights and 2 are in the international arrival hall. The belts move slowly as the passengers check for their luggage. The belts are surrounded by plants and foliage. Thai furnishings and advertisements also go around the baggage belts.
The seats must be confirmed before time. This can be done by calling the airport services that are ready for help all through the day. The customers may also inquire their flight times from the help desks at the airport. The airline websites or help lines can also help regarding the flight times and seating arrangements of the passengers.
Depending on the seats availability the tickets can be bought from the airport. They can be booked in advance online or from the airline office too.
