Kochi Airport which is known as the Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is located in Nedumbassery, around 30 km northeast of Kochi. It is the first Greenfield airport in India which was set up by the public private partnership model (PPP) in the civil aviation infrastructure sector in India.
The Cochin International Airport was built in the year 1999 in the unique and traditional style of Kerala architecture. The airport is strategically located and is easily accessible by all the National highways that pass through Kerala (NH 47, NH 17 and NH 49). The airport is also close to the Angamaly railway station and Cochin sea port.
The airport is the 4th busiest airport in India in international passenger traffic ferrying 2,919,707 passengers and seventh busiest in overall passenger traffic carrying 4,880,773 passengers during the year 2012-2013. There are total of 3 terminals each for domestic passengers, international passengers and cargo terminal. Domestic Terminal - The domestic terminal has an area of 100,000 sq mt, and is designed to handle up to 400 passengers at peak times. There are 26 common use terminal equipment enabled check-in counters out of which 6 are premium check-in counters and 4 are self check-in counters. There are 6 security gates, a family lounge, business class lounge, 3 baggage carousals, a food court in the waiting area and a restaurant in the lobby. There are numerous shops as well.
International Terminal - The international terminal of the Cochin International Airport has 36 passport control counters, 12 security gates and 12 customs counters. There are four premium lounges for first class and business class passengers. There are 10 gates and 5 jet ways along with 4 baggage carousals and can accommodate 1800 people any time. There are 27 specific earmarked immigration counters at the departure and 23 at the arriving terminal.
The Cochin International Airport has a dedicated cargo terminal as well which handles around 40,000 MT in a year.
