During 1940s the US army built an airbase in Cancun in close proximity to the south coastline and an area called Alfredo V Bonfil for the purpose of war. After the war was over, the airport soon became available for civilian passengers. After few years of flight service operation, the airport was enlarged to meet up with the increasing flight demand. Eventually, the airfield became renowned as Cancun International (CUN) Airport. Due to this airport the economic condition of the region prospered directly and paved a bright future for tourism industry.
Cancun Airport with the investment of about 100 million dollars opened the Terminal III in 2007. After this, the capacity of the airport to adjust passengers would be whopping 20 million per year. The terminal III features more than 80 check-in counters, 12 boarding gates and high tech flight enquiry screens. Furthermore, a recent investment of 50 million dollars has been spent on the construction of a second runway which will measure approximately about 2,400 meters.
