Economical and domestic chartered airlines make use of Terminal I.  All the domestic airlines and some international airlines exploit Terminal II. Likewise, Terminal III is used primarily for the purpose of international destinations that are operational under the airlines from the European continent and the US. CUN Airport features two functioning parallel runways that can be used at the same time.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) are the one responsible for the operation of this airport. Also, it is the base for famous airlines such as Viva Aerobus and Volaris . The airport has gained mass popularity and stands among the busiest gateways to Mexico through air travel. In 2014, the expansion of Terminal II was carried out. Likewise, the expansion project of Terminal III is scheduled to finish towards the end of the 2015. The expansion project is expected to increase the number of passengers from 6 million to whopping 10 million annually. Moreover, by the end of 2017 the exclusive Terminal 4 modeling is scheduled to be complete.

History

During 1940s the US army built an airbase in Cancun in close proximity to the south coastline and an area called Alfredo V Bonfil for the purpose of war. After the war was over, the airport soon became available for civilian passengers. After few years of flight service operation, the airport was enlarged to meet up with the increasing flight demand. Eventually, the airfield became renowned as Cancun International (CUN) Airport. Due to this airport the economic condition of the region prospered directly and paved a bright future for tourism industry.

Cancun Airport with the investment of about 100 million dollars opened the Terminal III in 2007. After this, the capacity of the airport to adjust passengers would be whopping 20 million per year. The terminal III features more than 80 check-in counters, 12 boarding gates and high tech flight enquiry screens. Furthermore, a recent investment of 50 million dollars has been spent on the construction of a second runway which will measure approximately about 2,400 meters.  After which, the capacity of aircrafts movements will increase predicting the growth of passengers.
