Dallas Love Field Airport – Texas’s Love Field   

The Dallas Love Field Airport was the major airport serving the city of Dallas in Texas until the operation of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) started in 1974. Owned by the City of Dallas and operated by Dallas Department of Aviation, the Dallas Love Field Airport serves Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington and is hub for Southwest Airlines and Virgin America. The airport is at elevation of 148 meters above sea level and presently has 2 concrete runways measuring 2,363 meters and 2,682 meters and a single asphalt runway which is 1,874 meters in length. The airport is home to the corporate head of Southwest Airlines and is at a distance of 10 km northwest of downtown Dallas. All the general aviation services viz fuel, maintenance, hangar rentals, and charters at the Dallas Love Field Airport are taken care of by Fixed Base Operators (FBOs). The airport spreads on an area of 1,300 acres and has a single terminal with 20-gate concourse. The existing terminal at the airport was modernized at the cost of $519 million.

History

The airport has been in existence since 1917 when it was used by the U.S. Army. The airport named after Moss L. Love, who was a part of U.S. Army 11th Cavalry and died in an airplane crash on September 4th 1913. The airport was inaugurated on 19th October 1917 and during the time it served as a duty airfield for United States Army Air Service which conducted flight training. After the end of the First World War, the airport was converted into a storage facility. Civilian services began from the airport I 1927. During the Second World War the airport was reconverted as a duty airfield for Texas World War II Army. All military services ceased after the end of the Second World War and the airport officially became a civil airport on March 9, 1947 with the inauguration of the Lemmon Avenue Terminal Building at the airport. Many rounds of extensive expansions happened at the airport since then. The growing passenger numbers at the Dallas Love Field Airport resulted in the construction of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 1974. The Dallas Love Field is still operational and is a base for numerous domestic as well as few international flights.
