Dar Es Salaam (DAR) International Airport is also known as Julius Nyerere International Airport. It serves the Dar Es Salaam City which is the Tanzania’s central hub for economic reason and physical location. It is also the Tanzania’s largest city. The international airport of Dar Es Salaam is located in the southwest region, 12 km away from the central city area. The airport was renamed to Dar es Salaam in the year 2006, from its former label. The name was given to honor the first ever president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere. DAR airport served 1,829,219 passengers in the financial year 2011.
The German authorities from the colonial government were the first to provide the blueprint and constructed the airport in 1918. The initial spot was located in Tanganyika at Kurasini in the district of Temeke. They named it Mkeja Airport.
In 1954, the structure of Terminal I of DAR Airport was constructed. Likewise, in 1952 the structure of Terminal II was commenced by the Government of Tanzania in 1982. The construction was completed during the year 1984.
During the year 2005, October, formerly known as Dar es Salaam International (DIA) Airport was renamed to Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport. Then in 1st November 2006 it was again renamed to Julius Nyerere International Airport.
During the operational year of its service to 2004 from 1980, a total number of 9 million passengers used the airport to reach their destinations. The average passengers per day calculated is 2770.
In the year of 2013 in April, The contract agreement between the authorities of Tanzania Airports and Dutch company, BAM international was signed for the construction of Terminal III. The first stage of the plan was to construct the terminal with an estimated capacity of passenger with figure of 3 million on yearly basis. In coming years, the second phase of construction would result to an added capacity of passengers figuring extra 2.5 million on yearly basis. After the construction of Terminal III, employment of Terminal II will be only for the sake of domestic passengers.

How to check-in
For those of you who hate queue online check-in is available. Surf the website for check in procedure. Nevertheless, you can check-in at counters in airport. You can put down your bags at the airline counter but pick up at least an hour before departure. It will depend where you are travelling. You can check in a night previous to your departure flight and then simply go off through security checkpoint. However, some airlines may charge you.
Baggage and Allowance
Before proceeding through check-in section, all passengers with their baggage are screened to make sure that no prohibited items and hazardous substances are included.
