Indira Gandhi International Airport, named after the former prime minister, is located 23km south of the bustling city centre. The 24-hour airport operates both domestic and international airplanes to important cities not only in India but other parts of the world.
The airport is located 16km from the Kashmere Gate ISBT where you would be able to take state buses and private buses to major cities of North India. If you’re heading to major railheads of India, head to the New Delhi railways station located 21.7km away.
The International Terminal which operates 35 airlines flying to many major cities around the globe. The Domestic Airport is segmented into three terminals - Terminal 1A, Terminal 1B and the Domestic Arrival Terminal (ID). All terminals are open 24 hours and have services and facilities to make it convenient for all passengers traveling through the airport. There are information counters available in all terminals, making it convenient for passengers to gain 24-hour information and assistance.
If you’re planning on heading to other cities across India, head to Terminal 3 which is apparently the 8th largest airport in the world. Domestic airlines like Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Air India run from here to other major cities in the country. A free shuttle bus is available to transfer passengers between the International and Domestic Terminals. A golf cart service is also available for transfers between domestic terminals.
Services and Facilities
Lounge. Plaza Premium operates six executive 24-hour lounges at both the international and domestic terminals. Passengers are requested to pay a nominal fee for use of these lounges. Services include a workspace for refreshments and massage facilities. Passengers are required to pre-book for the lounges online to guarantee a seat. The ITC Welcome Group Green Lounge and Sams Snooze at My Space is available throughout the day at the International Terminal. The Amex Platinum Lounge is available in Terminal 1 for cardholders.
WiFi/Internet Services. There is free WiFi available in Terminal 3 for 20 minutes. Connect to the “Aircel WiFi” network. You will require a working mobile phone to receive a username and password. Any WiFi usage after 20 minutes is chargeable.
Business & Conference. There are conference and banqueting facilities readily available at the Radisson Blu Plaza Delhi hotel, which is close to the airport.
Shopping. There are several handicraft shops selling statues of Hindu deities and household decoration items. There are even shops selling jewellery and duty-free shops where passengers can purchase liquor and tobacco.
General Services. There are ATMs and bank services available across all the domestic and international terminals. Public telephones and postal services are also widely available. The medical centres in each terminal are operated by doctors throughout the day. Rest rooms ad babycare rooms are available in all terminals. Also, Terminal 3 has lounges, naps and shower rooms for its passengers. There are designated smoking areas in all three terminals where passengers can go to for their nicotine fix. There is a smoking area in Terminal 1D on the first floor near the Food Street. There is also a ventilated smoking room available in the International Departures area post security checks.
Eating Facilities. There are restaurants available in the arrival and departure terminals with Indian to Continental cuisines. The Terminal 3 departure area has one of the largest assortment of cafes, bars, restaurants and fast food outlets.
Transit Hotels. Transit hotels and sleeping pods are available within the airport and near the airport. Hotel Delhi Aerocity, and Hotel Impress, both located near the airport have airport pick-up for passengers. If you intend on sleeping at the airport, Eaton Smart New Delhi Transit Hotel, Sam’s Snooze at My Space and Ibis New Delhi Airport offer hourly rates and day rooms.
