Durban Airport – Durban’s Premier Airport

King Shaka International Airport, which is simply known as Durban airport is the major airport serving Durban in South Africa. The airport is at a distance of 35 km from the city center in La Mercy and is currently owned by Dube Tradeport Company and operated by Airports Company South Africa. At an elevation of 97 meters above sea level, the airport at present has a single asphalt runway which measures 3,700 meters. Designed by Osmond Lange Architects and Planners it is a focus city for, British Airways operated by Comair and Airlink and serves as a hub for SA Express. The airport has 2 terminals, a passenger terminal with 72 check-in counters and 18 self-service kiosks along with best of amenities along with a handling capacity of 7.5 million passengers and services and 1 cargo terminal with a capacity of 1,000,000 metric tons of cargo in a year. In the year 2014, the airport served 4,524,894 and recorded 49,355 aircraft movement, making it the 9th busiest airport in Africa.


This is among the newest airports in the country operational only since 1st May 2010. It was built to replace the existing Durban International Airport when there was not room for further expansion at the existing airport. While the construction of the new airport began as early as 1973, but due to the economic slowdown, it was stalled and construction resumed only in late 1990’s. The airport was built at the cost of R6.8 billion and was named after Shaka, who was the leader of the Zulu nation in the early 19th century. The airport has been operational for the last five years and long term plan for expansion and future development of the airport is already underway. It is estimated that by 2060, the airport will be equipped with 2 parallel runways and the passenger handling capacity will increase to 45 million in a year.


The current facility at the Durban Airport has the capacity to handle the Boeing 777-300ER. While Air Mauritius, South African Airways, Airlink, British Airways, Emirates, FlySafair, Qatar Airways,, LOT Polish Airlines, Mango and South African Express are the major passenger airlines, Airlink Cargo, BidAir Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo, Imperial Air Cargo, Khuphuka Kings, South African Airways and South African Express are the cargo airlines that currently operate to and from the King Shaka International Airport.


Though the airport is just 5 years old, it has received a few awards for its world class service and state-of-the-art infrastructure.

If you are flying out of the Durban Airport then you have multiple options of check-in. Passengers can web check-in from the comfort of their home and can get their boarding pass printed. This service is available between 24 hours to 3 hours before flight departure. At the airport, 72 check-in counters and 18 self-service kiosks are available for the assistance of the tourists and generally counter open 2 hours prior to departure of international flight and 1 hour before the schedule departure of domestic flight. If you fail to check-in within the allotted time, then the airline has the right to deny boarding.

Baggage Allowance

The amount of baggage that you can carry with yourself is the prerogative of the airline and each airline may have a difference policy regarding the same. Most of the airport around the world do not allow airline to check-in a baggage which weighs more than 32 kg and a hand baggage exceeding 15 kg in weight and 115 cm in dimension.
