The airport was built during the colonial times and was then known as Elisabethville Airport and Luano airport. The airport played an important role during the Katanga war. Also known as the Congo Crisis, this unrest spanned between 1960 and 1965 and an estimated 100,000 people are believed to have been killed during the crisis. After the crisis was over, the airport came under the wing of the United Nations Force in the Congo who extensively used the airport as a base against the secessionist government.
