Bishkek Airport – Kyrgyzstan’s Most Important Airport

Bishkek Airport is officially known as Manas International Airport and is the major international airport in Kyrgyzstan. The airport is located at a distance of 25 km from the country’s capital, Bishkek and is a joint civil and military airport. The airport is at an elevation of 637 meters above mean sea level and serves as a base for Air Bishkek, Avia Traffic Company, Kyrgyzstan Air Company and Sky Bishkek. The airport is also used by US Air Force which uses the base as a Transit Center for supporting the Operation Enduring Freedom and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. The airport was formerly known as Manas Air Base and has a single concrete runway measuring 4,204 meters. As per the standards of ICAO CAT II, the airport has an ILS system which allows aircrafts to operate even during low ceiling and visibility.


Services to the airport began in October 1974 and the first ever flight was operated by Aeroflot. The Manas International Airport was built to replace the existing old Bishkek airport. The airport was named after Chinghiz Aitmatov, who was a famous writer and intellectual belonging to the country. The country at that time was under the rule of the Soviet Union and first the first ever flight was scheduled to Moscow from Bishkek. The country gained independence in 1991 and since then the airport saw its downfall due to negligence. The airport saw the first round of expansion after US took permission from the Kyrgyz Government to use the airport for military operations in Afghanistan. The airport was named as Ganci Air Base’ to commemorate Peter J. Ganci, Jr. (chief of New York Fire Department) who lost his life in the 11 September terrorist attacks. It was later renamed as Manas Air Base. During 2007, the airport was again renovated by the Kyrgyz Government.

MNG Airlines, RUS Aviation, Silk Way Airlines, Turkish Airlines Cargo, and Uzbekistan Airways are the major cargo airlines operating to and from the airport.


The airport has been serving the country for more than a decade now but till date it has not received any awards for the same.

How to Check-in

Option of online check-in is available for most of the airline operating from the Manas International Airport. However, in case it is not available with the airline that you are travelling with then you can use the check-in counters available at the airport. Generally check-in counters close 1 hour before departure of domestic flights and 2 hours in case of international fight. The rules regarding check-in may differ from one airline to the other; therefore you should speak to your airline regarding the same.

Baggage Allowance

Every airline operating from the Manas International Airport might have their own policy regarding baggage allowance and can vary from each other. As a general standard, luggage weighing between 20 kg to 32 kg can be checked-in and as hand luggage anywhere between 5 kg to 12 kg is allowed. Please note that the baggage allowance is allotted based on the class or travel as well as travel destination.


Pre booking of seat is generally offers by most of the airlines operating from Manas International Airport. This can be done online during the online check-in process. However, there is a small catch – this service if chargeable. You can also make a request for your preferred seat at the airline counter but it is not guaranteed as tickets are subject to availability.
