History

This airport opened its doors officially on 14th September 1969. Iberia Fokker F27 was the maiden plane to use the new runway. It flew the Las Palmas-Fuerteventura-Lanzarote route. In 1973, the airport started to operate its maiden flights to European countries with Condor airline. It linked Dusseldorf in Germany directly with Puerto del Rosario. In the subsequent years, the airport witnessed a substantial growth in operations. This resulted to a series of improvements that started in 1978. This ensured that the airport met the demands and needs of the increasing passenger numbers.

In 1992, Fuerteventura airport received over 1,600,000 passengers. This made it necessary to start extensive refurbishment of aircraft and terminal parking areas. In 1994, construction of new access road, power plant, taxiway, aircraft apron, and terminal building started. There was also the construction of a car park, double lane and an impressive detour on Puerto de Rosario-Matorral. With these new facilities, it was more than possible to handle more than five million passengers annually. The airport could now handle more than 3,100 passengers every hour during the rush hour periods.
