Göteborg Landvetter Airport is a public airport operated by Swedavia and is around 23 km from the city center. Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is the second largest airport in Sweden after Stockholm-Arlanda and in the year 2014, the airport catered to 5.2 million passengers. The airport features eight air bridges, a special area designated for flights outside the Schengen Area, transfer area, restaurants and many other facilities for the passengers.

History

The Gothenburg Landvetter Airport started operations only in 1977 after all passenger services were moved from the existing Torslanda Airport to the new airport. Säve Flygplats which was renamed as Gothenburg City Airport was a major military airport until 2001 when a few budget flights started operating from here. However, the airport was closed for reconstruction in 2014–2015, thus transferring all the existing services to the Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. The airport was operated by Luftfartsverket until 2009 after which Swedavia took over. In 2015, Swedavia signed a 10 year contract with DHL Express for the construction of a new cargo terminal at the airport. The construction will begin by the end of 2015 and is slated to complete in a year.
