The Gothenburg Landvetter Airport started operations only in 1977 after all passenger services were moved from the existing Torslanda Airport to the new airport. Säve Flygplats which was renamed as Gothenburg City Airport was a major military airport until 2001 when a few budget flights started operating from here. However, the airport was closed for reconstruction in 2014–2015, thus transferring all the existing services to the Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. The airport was operated by Luftfartsverket until 2009 after which Swedavia took over. In 2015, Swedavia signed a 10 year contract with DHL Express for the construction of a new cargo terminal at the airport. The construction will begin by the end of 2015 and is slated to complete in a year.
