 HAM is an international airport situated in Hamburg which is the second largest city of Germany. It is among the top five busiest airport of Germany which is measured in terms of number of passengers of total 14,759,278 passengers and 154,123 aircraft movement during 2014.

This is one of the oldest airport in the world which is still in operation. The airport has a parking facility for 10,000 vehicles which is operated by an automatic parking guidance system. It offers a variety of restaurants, bars, duty free shops, gift shops etc. It has health facilities which are available at German Red Cross (DRK). Disabled travellers are needed to inform the airline authority about their needs during the travel. HAM airport is accessible to wheel chairs and disabled toilets. Airport Information desks are available at both the terminals and the office is located in the Airport Plaza from where the passengers can collect their travel tickets and get the required information about the boarding. It has a total of four terminals in which Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are operated by international airlines to international destinations. Three Airline Lounges are available at the Terminal 2. The airport is fitted with 60 Internet access points which covers all the terminals and some parts of the pier area allowing access to internet.  The airport post office is also available at Terminal 2. Foreign Exchange desks are available at both the Terminals.


This airport laid its first brick in January 1911 with an area of 45 hectares which expanded to 60 hectares in 1913.  Some part of the airport was used for airship operations while the other part was used for fixed wing aircraft. The airship hanger was destroyed during the First World War. In 1945 during the British presence, it was given its current name. Lufthansa launched the passenger facility in 1955 due to which Lufthansa Technik still governs the major part of the airport. In 1990s modernization started to take front with the construction of a state of art Terminal 1 and an Airport shopping Plaza. It is equipped with Radisson Blu Hotel, Courtyard Hamburg Airport, Mercure Hamburg Airport, Leonardo Airport Hotel and Ibis Hamburg Hotel with a rapid transit system during 2005 to 2009.


HAM airport hosts more than 50 airlines which includes Air France, Air Berlin, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Swiss International Airlines, Meridiana, TAP Air Portugal, Aigle Azur, Brussels Airlines, German Wings, First Nation Airways, Rossiya, Safi airways, United Airlines, Air Philippines, SARO, and Continental Airlines etc. It has nine Airbus A319 and seven Boeing 737.


HAM international is one of the best airport in Central Europe as it has been into nominations for the best airport of Europe for nine years. Also it was awarded with the best regional airport of Europe in 2015.

How to check in?

You can check in online and print the boarding pass from 30 days to 2hrs before the scheduled departure of the flight. Boarding methods vary depending on the destination you are travelling to.

Number of bus services (Airport Express, Line 110 Airport Express etc.) are available to the city centre and around the HAM airport with a fare of £3. The journey takes 30 minutes. Shuttle services are also available at several destinations to both the terminals of HAM airport. Some require a short bus to transfer passengers from terminal to the aircraft and some use air jetty which requires a short walk.

Baggage and allowance

If you have only cabin bags you can head towards the terminal departure gates. If you have hold bags, then go to the Bag drop desks, located near the terminal departure gates. In case of missing baggage, you can contact the airport office located between Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. Extra charges for holding baggage are applied if the weight of the baggage is over the limit. These extra charges varies depending upon the airline in which you are travelling.


Airbus A319 offers seating for 156 passengers and is also equipped with optimized cabins for family members or corporate members. While the Boeing 737 has the seating capacity of 143 passengers.
