Hong Kong International Airport –Chek Lap Kok Airport

The Hong Kong international airport is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok and serves as the major airport in Hong Kong. The airport has been operating commercially since 1988 and has served as important base for regional trans-shipment centre, passenger commutation and gateway for destinations in Mainland China. The airport is managed by the Airport Authority of Hong Kong. This airport was built as a replacement to the former Hong Kong international airport, also known as Kai Tak airport. The airport is also known as Chek Lap Kok Airport.


The Hong Kong airport is among the busiest airports in the world and its passenger terminal building is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The airport employs more than 65,000 people, making it an important contributor to the economy of Hong Kong. The airport operates more than 100 flights across 180 countries in the world. According to the data collected in the year 2013, the airport was declared to be the 11th busiest airport in the world with 59.9 million passenger movements.


The airport covers an area of 1,255 hectares of land with2 terminals and a sky pier with a total of 66 boarding gates, 66 jet bridge gates and 7 virtual gates.

Terminal 1– Spanning on an area of 570,000 sq m, this terminal is the third largest airport passenger terminal building in the world. Services like duty free liquor & tobacco, designer fashion and leather accessories, pharmacy, numerous shops and dining options are available. Banking service, money exchange counters and ATM’s too are available on this terminal. Immigration service, baggage reclaim, custom and excise, meet & greet, visa & tourist information, special needs access, transport connection with Mainland China and weather information counters are available to serve the arriving passengers.

Terminal 2–This terminal is dedicated to departing passengers as it does not have any arrival facilities. Operational since 28thFebruary, 2007, this terminal is used mainly by low cost carriers and some full service carriers that provide flights from Hong Kong. The famous SkyPlaza is located at this terminal. Various shopping, dining and entertainment services are available at this terminal.

Other Terminals– Beside the 2 terminals there are quite a few concourses that too are available for public service. The North Satellite Concourse has a capacity of 20,000 sq m and serves 5 million passengers annually. Having 10 jet bridges, it was built to accommodate 90% of the airport’s passengers by aerobridge and is connected to terminal 1 by bus shuttle service. The Midfield Concourse is currently under construction and is scheduled to open by the end of 2015. Cathy Pacific city, Dragonair House, head office of Air Hong Kong and head office of Hong Kong airlines are some of the notable building located at the Hong Kong airport.
