Harare Airport – Zimbabwe’s Major International Airport

A foremost international airport in Zimbabwe, serving Harare, The Harare International Airport is the largest airport in Zimbabwe and serves as the major gateway for those planning a trip to the country. The airport is operated by Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe and is a joint civil as well as military airport. The airline is at an elevation of 1,490 meters above sea level and is currently serves as a base for Air Zimbabwe. Currently there is only one asphalt runway at the Harare International Airport which measures 4,745 meters. The runway at the Harare International Airport is one of the longest in Africa. In the year 2009, the airport has been recording more than 612,208 passenger movements, which make this airport one of the busiest in the country. The airport is at a distance of 15 km from the city center and presently houses 2 Passenger and 1 Cargo terminal which has an annual capacity 500 000 passengers and 13 786tonnes of cargo.

History

The Harare Airport was built after the existing Belvedere Airport was abandoned due to inefficient space, and the Harare international Airport was officially inaugurated on 5 February 1957. It was then called as Salisbury Airport and was constructed as a joint civil and military airport by the Government. The airport was initially scheduled to be operational in 1954 but due to crunch of fund, the opening of the airport was delayed by 2 years. Government of Rhodesia and Nyasaland commissioned the airport on 1 July 1956 and it was built at a cost of £924,000. This airport was among the busiest airports in the country but due to the political unrest in the country, many international airlines have stopped operating from the Harare International Airport.

Currently the Harare International Airport serves as base for Air Namibia, Air Botswana, Air Zimbabwe, Airlink, Kenya Airways, EgyptAir, Emirates, Malawian Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, Fastjet, LAM Mozambique Airlines, South African Airways, South African Express, TAAG Angola Airlines and Zimbabwe flyafrica which operate domestic as well as international flights. KLM Cargo is the major cargo airline operating to and from the Harare International Airport.

How to Check-in

Most of the airline flying out of or to Harare International Airport offers multiple options of check-in. Online check-in is the most popular and convenient options for those who want to skip the long queue at the airport. This service is available anywhere between 24 hours to 2 hours (or even 1 hour with some airline) before departure. Passengers can print their boarding pass as well. For those planning to check-in at the airport, the Harare International Airport has 18 check-in desks. While check-in time may be different for each airline, counter generally close 30 minutes before the departure of domestic flights and 1 hour in case of international flights.

Baggage Allowance

The policy regarding baggage allowance may differ from one airline to the others; hence it is advisable that you speak to your airline before travel to know id details about what and how much to carry when travelling from Harare International Airport. As a usual norm, generally passengers are allowed to check-in around 20 kg to 32 kg and carry a hand baggage which does not exceed 12 kg. This limit may increase or decrease depending upon the class and route of travel. If you are travelling with excess luggage, then you need to pay the charges for the same. This can be done at the airport or online during check-in (at a lower rate as compared to what you pay at the airport).

Seating

To relish the mesmerizing view of the city and its countryside during landing or takeoff, passengers are advised to book window seat. This can be conveniently done by pre selection of your seat online, offered by most of the airline flying to and from the Harare International Airport. However, this service is chargeable. At the airport, you can place a request for the seat of your choice during counter check-in, but they are not guaranteed.
