The Niagara Falls International Airport has been in existence since 1928 when it was just a municipal airport with four crushed-stone runways. During the Second World War the airport was under the jurisdiction of United States Army Air Forces which was managed by 3522d Army Air Force Base Unit. The airport began civil services only in 1946 and it was jointly used by United States Air Force and New York Air National Guard.
