Istanbul Ataturk Airport

Formerly called as Yesilkoy International Airport, Istanbul Ataturk Airport, located about 24 km (15 miles) to the west of Istanbul, is the prime international airport in the city and the biggest airport in Turkey. It was opened to public in 1924 and since 2000, TAV Airports Holdings has been operating the airport. Situated on the European side of the city, Istanbul Ataturk Airport, which we called today, was named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder as well as the first president of the Republic of Turkey. 

Hosting more than 51 million travelers in 2013, Istanbul Ataturk Airport has become world’s 17th busiest airport and 9th busiest airport in Europe in terms of total passenger traffic. Considering the international travelers traffic, it ranked 10th busiest airport in the globe. Built on area of 9.470.554 sq meters and located at a height of 50 m above mean sea level, this airport has three runways designated as - 17L/35R, 17R/35L and 05/23. The runways 17L/35R, 17R/35L measures same in length i.e.3000 m whereas the third runway 05/23 is 2,580 in length. Over 300 airlines flying to different parts of the world operate at Istanbul Ataturk Airport and it is the base centre for Turkish Airlines, Atlasjet and Onur Air.

Terminals –The airport has four major terminals –Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and General Aviation Terminal with 224 check-in counters, 26 boarding bridges and 90 passport counters. Terminal 1 is dedicated to domestic routes while Terminal 2 is a modernized terminal mainly used for international flights and Terminal 3 handles cargo flights. The General Aviation Terminal has both domestic as well as international halls.

Facilities –The terminals at the airport has facilities such as conference halls, business class lounges, eateries, retail outlets, money exchange service, ATMS, restaurants, lost baggage counter, meeting halls with wireless internet, medical help and more. A total of 8 mosques can be found at the airport. Sprawls over an area of 179,000 sq meters, the airport’s parking lot has the capacity of holding 700 cars at a time. Along with a light rail service connecting to the airport, several transportation facilities including buses, cars & shuttles are also available to and from the airport.
