Mykonos Island Airport (JMK) – Experience the island at its best

Mykonos Island Airport is located a few kilometres southeast of the town of Mykonos, Greece. It is located just 10 minutes from the town and this makes it easier to access. People moving in and out of the airport will find it easy to access their hotels and other accommodation places because the airport is not situated far from the town. Public transport is not available at the airport but taxis are available. Many of the hotels in the town also offer transfer to the hotel by mini buses that are private from the hotel. It is very convenient to travel through this airport especially to people who just want to relax after that long flight because there is no time wasted travelling after you land at the airport.

History

Mykonos Island National Airport began its operations in the year 1971 in the month of June. The airport features a 1900 metres runway and is elevated at 405ft above the sea level. In the early 1960s when the town of Mykonos became the centre of the hippie movement, the airport’s importance increased. In search of peace and tranquility thousands of tourists flood here to the beautiful locale. When the authorities realized this they decided that the destination could be made profitable and they immediately decided to put extensive investments to modernize the airport. This helped the town of Mykonos to become a very major money earner for the government with thousands of tourists landing every day to experience the rich historical traditions of the town.

Awards

The airport is fairly small and it has one terminal. Though it is small, it is able to accommodate the number of tourists that land daily in the airport. It has limited flight connections and operating hours during the off-peak tourist season. This can be a reason why the airport has not attracted awards though it’s recognized as a very busy and quality airport in Greece. It practically serves the Mykonos Island and the surrounding hotels with almost all tourists that check in there. The airport is going to attract many awards if it is going to continue the operations as it is doing.
