Located near the Andimachia village, the airport is the second closest airport to Bodrum. The closest airport to Bodrum is the Milas Bodrum airport. The airport is located 22 km south west of Kos Town. The airport is a civilian facility completely. Managed and operated by the Hellenic Aviation Authority, the airport serves as an international entry point. Kos international airport was founded on 4th April in the year 1964. The airport back then had a runway of 1200 meters. It was manufactured with open type asphalt. In the year 1980 a new terminal was inaugurated at the Kos international airport. This was done to meet the ever growing needs of passengers. The runway was extended to 2400 meters in the year 1973. In the year 1997, airport installations were updated when a new building for arrivals was constructed at the airport.
