The Kulu airport, which is also known as Bhuntar airport or Kulu Manali airport is located in Bhuntar, which is a small town in Himachal Pradesh. This is a domestic airport and is located around 10 km south of Kulu town. Bhuntar is considered a challenging airport for pilots because of its single runway set in a deep valley whose peaks rise several thousand feet higher than the runway.
The new terminal at the Kulu airport was inaugurated in the year 2008 and the airport apron was enlarged in order to park two aircraft at a time. At present only Jagson airlines and Air India regional operates low fare flights to Kulu from other parts of the country. The airport is under the management of Airports Authority of India and plans of expanding the airport runway by 550 meters at a cost of Rs 248 crores is under purview.
This is a domestic airport which only has one terminal serving both arriving as well as departing passengers. The airport has 2 x-ray baggage facilities available along with trolleys, medical assistance and wheel chair provision for physically challenged and aged passengers. There is a small snack counter but facilities of duty free shopping are not available at this airport. Tourist information counter run by Himachal tourism department is available at the terminal. The Kulu airport has the parking capacity of 100 cars at NTB. The Chandigarh airport, which is 148 km from Kulu, serves as the nearest international airport connecting Kulu with the rest of the world.
