Luanda Airport – Your Gateway to Angola

The airport is Luanda is officially known as Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport or Aeroporto Internacional 4 de Fevereiro and is located in the southern part of the Angola’s capital, Luanda. It is the only international airport in the country and serves the Republic of Angola via 12 provincial airports. He Portuguese name of the airport, Quatro de Fevereiro has a symbolic gesture and it means 4th February, the day on which the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime was started and is celebrated as a national holiday in the country. The airport is located at an elevation of 74 meters above sea level and currently has two asphalt runways measuring – 3,716 meters and 2,600 meters. The airport is located around 5 km from the city center and offers multiple facilities to its passengers. A new airport, Angola International airport, is being constructed and after its completion in 2017, the present airport at Luanda will be replaced. The airport is presently the main hub for Angolan flag carrier TAAG and in the year 2009 the airport recorded 1.8 million passenger movements.


The Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport, which is simply known as Luanda Airport was built in the year 1961 after the Republic of Angola gained independence from Portugal and the city was named after the date. The airport is served by numerous African and European flight operators and has been constantly upgraded and expanded to meet the growing requirement of the passengers. The airport is gateway to the country and is the busiest airport in Angola. Luanda airport is a joint civil and military airport.


Currently the airport is served by more than 18 flights operators. Chartered flights are also operated by SonAir from Luanda to Houston Intercontinental Airport.  Presently more than 35 domestic as well as international cities are directly connected to Luanda Airport. Air              France, Air Namibia, Arik Air, British Airways, Royal Air Maroc , Brussels Airline, Equaflight, Iberia, Emirates, LAZ Mozambique Airlines, Lufthansa, SonAir, Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airways, KLM, Kenya Airways,  and TAP Portugal are among the major flight operators that connect Luanda International airport with the world.


The airport has been in existence for more than 5 decades but till now the airport has not been awarded for its outstanding service to boost the aviation sector of the country.

How to Check-in

Online check-in, mobile check-in as well as counter check-in options are available for passengers travelling from the Luanda Airport. While online check-in can be generally done 24 hours till 1 hour prior to your flight departure, counter check-in should be done minimum of 70 minutes before travel time when in economy class and 60 minutes before schedule departure in case of business traveller. For passengers who have checked-in online and are travelling with hold luggage, baggage drop-off points closes strictly 70 minutes prior to departure.

Baggage Allowance

The allocation of baggage allowance varies from one flight to the other and passengers need to discuss with their airline regarding the same. However, as per the general practice across the airports, passengers in first class are allowed up to 40 kg of luggage; those in business class can carry 30 kg of luggage while those travelling in economy class are allowed up to 20 kg of luggage. As far as hand baggage is concernemd, 10 kg, 7 kg and 5 kg is allowed for those travelling in first class, business class and economy class, respectively.


Most of the airlines flying to and from the Luanda airport allow the passengers to pre book their seat online. This facility can be availed 24 hours before departure, but services fee is incurred. At the airport seats are not guaranteed as they are allotted on first come first serve basis, so if you do not wish to pay anything extra for your seat, make sure you come to the airport before time and make a request for your preferred seat. It is advisable to book window seat if you want to enjoy the views during landing and takeoff.
