Lahore International Airport is also known as Allama Iqbal International Airport. It is ranked third among the busiest airports and second in terms of size in all Pakistan. In a day, the average flights count to between 75 and 80 in this airport and become most busy during the season of Hajj. The International Airport of Lahore approximately handles four million passengers annually. It was renamed after the national poet, Allama Iqbal who was instrumental in formation of separate Muslim state detaching from India.

Lahore International Airport is situated approximately 15 km away from the city centre.

In March 2003, the newly constructed air terminal complex was opened with an increased capacity. The objective was to increase the number to 6.5 million commuters by 2015 and the old terminal is brought to use during the Hajj for pilgrims to fly towards Saudi Arabia. Not only did the construction of new terminal increase the passenger capacity but was objectively built to provide subliminal historical message about Lahore’s Mughal history.

Walton Airport was the major airport during the post – independence times. When the first ever Boeing 720 was acquired by Pakistan International Airlines, Waltron Airport proved incapable of handling such shipment. Then Pakistani authorities agreed upon to construct a new airport and it was successfully inaugurated in 1962. It was named Lahore International Airport. After then, Lahore would be accessible by international passengers.

By next couple of decades, air travel demand stipulated. To meet the region’s expanding demand the government then reacted by constructing a new terminal in 2003. General Pervez Musharraf officially inaugurated the terminal.  The airport would then become the second largest in the country following Jinnah International Airport of Karachi. All the flight activities then were moved to the new airport and the old one was handed to military. Nonetheless, it was developed into a terminal especially for pilgrims to travel during the Hajj season.

After a decade, in 2014, the Prime Minister officially granted permission to expand the AIIA terminal. By the beginning of 2015, the reformation of Hajj terminal was completed with exclusive check in section, lounges and security address for the season of Hajj.
