A civil cum military airport, Memphis International Airport is located at a distance of 11 km from Memphis which is in Shelba County in Tennessee. Memphis–Shelby County Airport Authority is the owner as well as the operator of the airport. The Memphis International Airport has 4 concrete runways which measures – 3,389 meters, 2,743 meters, 2,841 meters and 2,727 meters. At an elevation of 104 meters above sea level, the airport is hub for FedEx Express, SeaPort Airlines and Southern Airways Express. The airport is the busiest cargo airport in the United States and second only to Hong Kong in the world. In the year 2013, the airport served 3.57 million passengers and 225,592 aircraft movement was recorded.


While the airport has been in existence for almost a century now, it came to limelight only in 1939 when Eastern Air Lines started operations from Memphis to Muscle Shoals. United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command used the airport to send overseas aircraft during the Second World War. The expansion of the runway happened in 1951 and since then the airport has underwent multiple rounds of renovation and expansion, the latest being in 2008 when the parking area and control tower were expanded at the cost of $72.6 million. Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, which operates the airport, announced the plan for further expansion of the airport, in 2014. The renovation project will cost around $114 million start in late 2015 and end around 2020, making it one of the best airports in the country.


From the Memphis International Airport, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, OneJet, SeaPort Airlines, Southern Airways Express, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways and US Airways Express operate regular passenger flights.
