Macau International Airport (MFM) – The Gateway To Macau
The Macau International Airport is situated in Macau, a special administrative Region in China. In Macau, it is located in the Taipa Island’s eastern end. It has been operating commercially ever since November of 1995.
Ever since the airport first opened, it has become a very common transfer point to all those people who wish to travel from China to Taiwan or back. It also serves as the passenger hub for people who are looking to reach destinations in Southeast Asia and the mainland China. In 2006 alone, about 5 million passengers along with cargo of approximately 220,000 tonnes, was handled by the airport.
Although Macau is governed by China, it has its very own immigration policies, which are different from the customs territory in mainland China. Every single traveler who passes through this airport will have to go through an inspection by immigration and customs before boarding an international flight.
Although the plan for the Macau International Airport (MFM) was decided in the year 1987, the construction of the same began only in December of the year 1989. It was officially opened for the passengers in 1995, while Macau was still under the Portuguese rule.
Prior to the opening of this particular airport, Macau had just two temporary airports, apart from several permanent heliports. The only seaplane and helicopter services operated here were by Cathay Pacific and East Asia Airlines. But now, there are several international airlines connecting Macau to a number of destinations as across the world.
The Macau International Airport (MFM) has a very large number of international airlines flying through it. It connects Macau to several places around the world.
This airport isn’t a very large one, and is designed to handle just 6,000,000 passengers every year. It has 4 jetways and 10 gates. But due to this small size, this airport can handle flights like Antonov 124s and Boeing 747s. These form an extremely important link between the overseas markets and the local manufacturers.
Macau is that destination, which has a number of award winning places. However, the Macau International Airport (MFM) isn’t one among them. The airport isn’t a very large one and it isn’t prepared to handle more than 2,000 passengers an hour.
The facilities that are provided at the airport too have scope for improvement. Maybe this is the reason why it still hasn’t won any award so far.
Routes And Destinations
The Macau Airport has grown considerably ever since it first began operating. The airlines that fly from this very airport reach both domestic, as well as, international destinations all across this world.
Some of the very important airlines that fly to and from here include, Air Asia, Air China, Cebu Pacific, EVA Air, Juneyao Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Tigerair Taiwan, Xiamen Airlines and several more.
