History

Manila Ninoy Aquino (MNL) airport started operating in 1935. This was the first airport to offer commercial services in the city. The airport switched its locations in 1937.

Building of the first runway took place in 1954. In 1956, a terminal and tower to control the airport were constructed. The main aim of this construction was to serve international passengers. The inauguration of a new terminal took place in 1961 on 22 September.

In 1972, the main terminal was attacked by fire. A lot of destruction occurred during this period. Reconstruction took place in 1973. This effect led construction of another terminal. The new terminal was to cater a greater capacity compared to the first.

The airport suffered several fire attacks in the first period of operation. A new terminal construction took place in 1989. It was aimed at serving more passengers. There was need for more terminals following an increase in the population of passengers. The Spain government made an approval. The third terminal was constructed in 1997.

The terminal was affected by several factors like technical delays. The operation was therefore done partially.  

Although the airport went through several challenges, its construction finally pulled through. Today it operates flights that fly to different nations.
