Maputo International Airport – Mozambique’s Best Airport

At a distance of 3 km from northwest of the center of Maputo in Mozambique, Maputo International Airport is a major airport in the country. Also known as Lourenço Marques Airport or Mavalane International Airport, it serves Maputo, the largest city and capital of Mozambique. It is a public airport operated by Aeroportos de Moçambique (Mozambique Airports Company) and currently the hub for LAM Mozambique Airlines and Kaya Airlines. The Maputo International Airport is at an elevation of 44 meters above sea level and has 2 asphalt runways – 3,660 meters and 1,700 meters in length. In 2009, the Maputo International Airport served 668,706 passengers and was among the busiest airports in the country.


The Maputo International Airport has been serving the people of Mozambique since 1940, when the first terminal was opened. Since then, there have been regular expansions and renovations to make it one of the best airports in the world. The airport got its new terminal in 2010 and it was built by China's Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company with an estimated cost of US$75 million. The terminal has the capacity of handling 900,000 passengers in a year. The second round of expansion at the Maputo International Airport is already going on and once it is completed, the airport will have a new domestic terminal along with 14 check-in counters, a presidential VIP lounge, electric central cooling system and electronic panels that will display flight details. Once the operation begins, the new terminal is expected to serve 400 arriving and departing passengers per hour as compared to the facility that could only handle 150 passengers per hour.


The current facility at the Maputo International Airport serves as base for Airlink, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, LAM Mozambique Airlines, Malawi Airlines, Moçambique Expresso, Qatar Airways, South African Airways, TAP Portugal and Turkish Airlines. LAM Mozambique Airlines and South African Airways Cargo are the cargo airlines that operate to and from the Maputo International Airport.


While the airport at Maputo offers some of the best facilities and service along with passenger friendly staff, till now the airport has not received any awards.

How to Check-in

Passengers travelling to and from the Maputo International Airport can avail multiple options of check-in. While online check-in is the most popular and convenient way to check-in, counter check-in also available. Passengers can avail the online check-in option to avoid the queue at the airport. While online check-in can be done 24 hours prior to departure of your flights, counters closes 1 hour before departure of domestic flight and 2 hours for those travelling to international destination. Baggage Allowance

As far as baggage is concerned, every airline that flies from Maputo International Airport may have a different policy. However as a general norm the capacity of check-in baggage can vary between 20 kg to 32 kg and can be increased or decreased depending upon the class of travel and the route you are travelling to. Passengers travelling is economy class are generally entitled to less baggage allowance that those travelling in business or first class. As hand luggage, the maximum limit that one can carry is 15 kg and this too depends on what class you are travelling.
