Munich Airport

Munich Airport serves the city of Munich, the capital of Bavaria in Germany. It is an international airport situated close to the old city of Freising, around 29 km from Munich city. In terms of passenger traffic, the airport ranks 2nd busiest airport in Germany and the 7th busiest airport in Europe with a capacity of hosting more than 38 million passengers a year. The airport is also among the busiest airports worldwide in terms of international traffic.

Overview

Perched at a height of 453 m above sea level, the airport consists of two parallel runways and a helipad. Each runway measures 4000 m in length and 60 m in width and has an orientation of 08R/26L and 26R/08L, while the helipad at the airport is 30 m in length. Munich airport is the secondary home base for Lufthansa that includes Lufthansa Regional as well as its Star Alliance partners aside from Frankfurt. However, the biggest international carrier in terms of passenger numbers is Air Dolomiti.

Terminals

The airport is currently served by two passenger terminals – Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 – Started functioning on May 17th, 1992, this terminal comprises of five modules divided as – A, B, C, D and E. Equipped with various facilities, the terminal can handle 25 million passengers annually. At present, the terminal serves all the flights that are not members of Star Alliance along with Lufthansa’s subsidiary Germanwings. Some of the main users of this terminal include Condor, Air France, Qatar Airways, Air Berlin, Delta Airlines, EasyJet, Emirates and British Airways.

Terminal 2 – This terminal began its operation in 2003 and has the capacity of handling 25 million passengers per annum. It is not designated into modules, instead, features a Central Plaza with all facilities arranged around it. The terminal is mainly used for Lufthansa and Star Alliance members.

A satellite building is undergoing construction and is a part of extension to Terminal 2. It is expected to complete by 2015. This extension is designed to accommodate additional 11 million passengers every year and will include additional gates and passenger air bridges.

The Airport Centre interlinking the two terminals has shopping, business and recreational facilities for travelers. Apart from this, the terminals provides many services for passengers including information desk, cafes, restaurants, bars, resting areas, souvenir shops and many more. There are also airport tours, a visitor’s terrace with seating area offering view of the easterly aircraft apron and a visitor’s park equipped at the Munich airport.
