Nadi International airport (NAN) is the main international airport in Fiji.  As the main gateway of airlines in the republic of Fiji it serves as a significant regional hub of the South Pacific islands. Nadi Airport was initially started as airstrips in New Zealand starting from August 1939 and accomplished in March 1940 which the British colonial authorities paid for. From 1941 they were enlarged there after completing the first phase of 7,000 feet of runway in January 1942 and the two others followed and were completed in April 1942.

In 1941 an airfield was commissioned and it was used by the United States Army Air Forces after the start of the Pacific War. B-17 Flying Fortresses were flown early during the war against Japanese targets in Solomon Islands and Philippines from Nadi. In 1943 the B-25 Michells flown by the 42d Bombardment Group from Nadi a time which the U.S Navy used it thus tagging it Naval Air Facility Nandi.

When the war ended New Zealand took over the control of the airport on 20th December 1946. The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand then started operating from Nadi in 1947. When the Fiji got independence in 1970, the government started taking part in the organization of the airport and took full control in 1979. Nadi was then selected to be the main airport of Fiji owing to its position on the desiccant west coast of Viti Levu.


Nadi serves as the functional base for Fiji Link and Fiji Airways which services 6 airports of southwest pacific and others on the Pacific Rim. It harbors several fleet which include Aircalin, Air Kiribati, Air New Zealand, Air Niugini, Air Vanuatu, Fiji Airways, Jetstar Airways, Korean Air, Nauru Airlines, Solomon Airlined, and Virgin Australia.
