Construction of the Enfidha airport started in 2007. The airport opened its doors two years later on 1 December 2009. The first flight took off from the airport on 4th December 2009. According to the people involved in construction, the total building costs were approximately 435 million Euros. Originally, this airport was designed and expected to be the second home of Tunis air. However, the airline was quick to clarify that only their occasional charter flights could use the airport. Today, this airport is mostly used by major European airlines that bring travelers to the magnificent Tunisian resorts.

Initially, the airport was named after Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the former Tunisian president. On 14th January 2011, he went into exile after the long social protests and chaos against his dictatorship. One day after leaving the country, his pictures, and names were plucked out from the airport buildings. Today, the airport bears the name Enfidha-Hammamet international airport.
