Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport – Japan’s Off Shore Airport

Situated in the artificial island in Ise Bay, Chūbu Centrair International Airport serves Nagoya in central Japan. Also called as Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport, it is located at a distance of 35 km from the city center and is owned as well as operated by Central Japan International Airport Co., Ltd. (CJIAC). At an elevation of 4 meters above sea level, the airport is a focus city for All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines and currently has a concrete/ asphalt runway measuring 3,500 meters in length. In the year 2006 the airport managed 11,721,673 passengers, making it the 8th busiest airport in the country. Classified as a first class airport, Chūbu Centrair International Airport serves as a main international gateway for the Chūbu region in Japan and is Japan's third off shore airport. The airport presently has 2 terminals that features dedicated ticket counters, baggage carousels, check-in points and custom facilities among others.

History

Chūbu Centrair International Airport is built on Japan’s second manmade island and is the third off shore airport in the country after Nagasaki Airport and Kansai International Airport. The construction of the airport started in August 2000 and the airport was officially inaugurated on 17th February, 2005 and was built at a cost of ¥668 billion. The operation of this airport took over all the commercial flights from Nagoya Airport and released Tokyo and Kansai airports of cargo shipments. The first airline to land at the airport was Boeing 767-300ER of Japan Airlines. However, the airport aw a decline in operations as a few airline companies withdrew their operations from the airport.

The airport is also base for Air Hong Kong, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, ANA Cargo, Asiana Cargo, Atlas Air, British Airways World Cargo, DHL Express, Kalitta Air, Nippon Cargo Airlines, Transmile Air Services and ULS Cargo which operates cargo airlines to and from the Chūbu Centrair International Airport.

How to Check-in

Passengers travelling from Chūbu Centrair International Airport have multiple options of check-in. Online check-in is available from 24 hours prior to departure and can be done 3 hours before the flight departs. This facility allows the passengers to print their boarding pass, thus saving then the time at the airport. Some of the airlines also have self-check-in counters at the airport where passengers can not only check-in but check their baggage and book their seat as well. When availing the option of counter check-in make sure you reach the airport minimum of two to three hours before schedule departure of your flight to ensure that you complete all the formalities within time.

Baggage Allowance

For details on baggage allowance, number of bags, restricted items etc, please contact the airline directly, as every airline might have a different regulation regarding baggage. While the limit is determined by the class of travel and the destination you are travelling. At the Chūbu Centrair International Airport there are small as well as large baggage lockers located at eight locations within the airport and charge between 300 to 600 yen per day. Charges are applicable in case of excess luggage. Please note that ‘Same-day baggage delivery service’ from Central Japan International Airport to hotels and lodges in select areas is also available from the airport.
