Chicago O'Hare International (ORD) Airport

Chicago O'Hare International (ORD) - More than a Travel Experience

This airport lays FarNorthwest of Chicago. This is about 17km northwest of the city. It serves the entire Chicago area. The airport works closely with the sister airport, the Midway airport as the alternative landing zone. It is the busiest in the whole world going by landings and take offs. The Department of Aviation in Chicago runs it.

It was constructed between 1942 and 1943. Initially, it was used as a manufacturing plant. This was during the height of World War II. Due to its proximity to transportation and the city, this site was preferred. In 1945, a proposal for construction of an aircraft facility came in. Laflin Rockwell (1915-1988) directed the construction and was responsible for site design and development. The airport got its current name in 1949. The name was in honour of a navy’s flying ace. From 1950 onwards, the airport kept overcrowding despite continued expansions. From 1953, huge and serious expansions kept going on. This was a move to make it Chicago’s main airport. First commercial flights commenced in 1955. In the same year, a Sky motive terminal was launched, and became the first one to handle corporate aircrafts.

From 1957, the schedule became even busier. Ten weekly-scheduled flights took off from this airport. In 1958, an international terminal was opened. By mid 1959, the airport was sitting on 7200 acres. Modern facilities including hangers, parking and new terminals were constructed. Complex ground terminal construction began in 1962. By 1972, O’Hare was serving more than ten million customers annually. In 1984, international flights relocated to terminal four. An international modern terminal was being constructed at the time. During 2013, the Aviation Department in Chicago offered a contract. This helped maintain the ground by use of livestock. Difficulties in accessing the runway lead to this move.

The airport’s dedicated service to customers has seen it get several awards. Some of the many awards it has received include:

·         Awarded North America’s leading airport four times. In 2002, 2002, 2012 and 2013.
