History

It is the fourth airport to be built in Phoenix City. In 1928 Scenic Airways built Sky Harbor with only one runway but the company collapsed after a year when the Black Friday Stock market crashed down. A company called Acme Investment then later took over the ownership or the airport until 1935. It’s in now 1935 that the City of Phoenix bought the airport at $100,000 from Acme Investment Company. Later after the warfare the airport commenced work on a new terminal for passengers and another two runways a parallel and a diagonal one.

In October 1952 Terminal 1 initially called “West Terminal” was opened, it had the first control tower of the airport. It operated until 1991 when it was interchanged to a cell phone waiting lot.

The master plan of the airport was redesigned to do away with cross runway so as to create a new terminal in 1952. America and Trans World Airlines in 1960 and 1961, respectively started jet services to Phoenix and later in 1962 terminal 2 earlier termed as “East Terminal” (which up to now is still being used) was opened. In October 1979 Terminal 3 was opened

In 1966 Bonanza Airlines which was in Las Vegas relocated its headquarters to Phoenix and merged with two airlines thus forming Air West that later became Hughes Airwest. In 1978 after airline deregulation a new airline was planned for by Ed Beauvais the former executive of Hughes Airwest and come 1981 he established America West Airlines. In 1983 it commenced service from Phoenix. It doubled its size within its first year and in a decade it had a countrywide networks.

As that was going in January 1982 on Southwest Airlines came to phoenix with 13 daily flights going to 12 cities and 64 daily flights by 1986 from phoenix. Construction of Terminal 4 commenced in 1989 and later opened on November 1990 becoming the largest of all terminals but the construction of the four concourses N1, N2, N3 and N4 ended in 2004.
