Port Of Spain Airport – Piarco International Airport

Serving the Port of Spain, Piarco International Airport which is also unofficially referred as Port of Spain Airport is a public airport. It is owned by Government of Trinidad and Tobago and currently operated by Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago. It is located at an elevation of 18 meters above sea level and is a major hub for Amerijet International ad Caribbean Airlines. The airport is located at a distance of 30 km from the Port of Spain in Piarco town and serves as the primary connection point for many passengers travelling from Guyana. The airport handled 1,621,584 international passengers, 629,560 domestic passengers and 253,325 in transit passengers in 2010 which made it the 7th busiest airport in the Caribbean. Having a 3,200 meters long runway, the Piarco International Airport also boasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure and world class facilities for the passengers.


The airport was opened for use on January 8th, 1931 to serve as Compagnie Generale Aeropostale for Venezuela. During the Second World War, the airport was also extensively used by the Royal Navy Observer School HMS Goshawk as well as United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force along with United States Navy. It was a major transport airfield during the war and after the war, it was handed over to civil control. After many year of service, the airport was renovated in 1990’s and in 2001 the expansion of taxiways, apron as well as runway was completed. The Piarco International Airport has two terminals serving general flights, cargo flights as well as helicopters.


Currently the airport is served by British Airways, American Airlines, Caribbean Airlines, Conviasa, Copa Airlines, Insel Air, JetBlue Airways, LIAT, Surinam Airways, United Airlines, Venezolana and WestJet. Amerijet International, ABX Air, Ameriflight, Caribbean Airlines Cargo, DHL Aviation and FedEx Express are the cargo airlines operating to and from the Piarco International Airport.
