Papeete Airport – The Island Airport

Fa'a'ā International Airport which is simply referred as Papeete Airport, is a major international airport serving the commune of Fa'a'ā, on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. This is the only international airport in the overseas collectivity of the French Republic and is located at a distance of 5 km from the Papeete town. A public airport operated by SETIL – Aéroports, the Fa'a'ā International Airport is at an elevation of 2 meters above mean sea level and has 3,420 meters long Bitumen/Asphalt runway. The airport is hub for Air Tahiti and Air Tahiti Nui. The Fa'a'ā International Airport is built primarily on reclaimed land on the coral reef just off-shore due to limited level terrain. Currently the airport has 5 terminals, all of which are located within a main building. Terminal 2 is the busiest of all terminals and has numerous cafes, shops, restaurant and one of the five Mc Donald’s in all of French Polynesia. In the year 2013, the airport recorded traffic of 1,150,610 passengers. The runway at the airport has the capacity to accommodate aircraft up to Boeing 747 and Airbus A380 size.

History

The airport has been operational since 1960 and since then has been serving as a strategic gateway to the South Pacific. Since its inauguration, the airport has been has been expanded and renovated multiple times to make its one of the best airports in the region.

How to Check-in

Counter check-in is the best way to check-in when planning a trip from the Fa'a'ā International Airport as some of the airline do not allow web or mobile check-in. Please speak to you airline directly to know if they have the option of online check-in. There are multiple counter at the Fa'a'ā International Airport to make the process of check-in quicker and hassle free. Generally counter open 2 hours before the departure of domestic flight and 3 hours before the departure of international flights. Before you leave for the airport, make sure you have enough time for security checks. In case you do not check-in within the stipulated time, the airline has the right to deny boarding.  

Baggage Allowance

Every airline operating to and from the Fa'a'ā International Airport might have different policies regarding baggage allowance.
