The Raleigh – Durham International Airport (RDU) is located about 4.5 miles from Morrisville in the Wake County in North Carolina. The airport is quite large and covers an area spanning 4,929 acres. It is well equipped and has three runways. The airport has three runways for direct flights both to domestic and international destinations. The airport sees 352 flights on a daily basis. 2011 saw a passenger traffic of about 9 million people.

The facilities available at the airport, as well as, its operations are taken care of by RDU Airport Authority. The Authority is in turn controlled by representatives from the Durham and Wake counties, and the Durham and Raleigh cities.

History

The Raleigh – Durham International Airport (RDU) was first opened in the year 1929, and was named as the Raleigh’s Municipal Airport. But very soon the airport was quickly outgrown. Hence, Raleigh – Durham Aeronautical Authority was chartered to build and also operate an airport that is larger and is situated between Durham and Raleigh. The new airport opened on May of 1943, with flights operating from Eastern Airlines.

The passenger terminal of the airport was built using the materials that came out from the four barracks of the Army Air Forces Air Technical Service Command airfield.

The Capital Airlines joined the fleet after the World War II and it was only in 1948 that the Piedmont Airlines arrived. By the year 1957, about 36 departures were officially shown.

It was only after the deregulation in the year 1979 that the Allegheny Airlines arrived and by the year 1985 other airlines began appearing like People Express, Ozark, Pan Am, New York Air, Trans World Airlines etc.

The airport saw the history’s most ambitious expansion which began in the year 2006 and was completed only in the year 2011 in January.

Awards

After the completion of the airport’s project for extension of the same, it went on to be awarded an Award for Excellence in Architecture. Apart from this award, the Raleigh – Durham International Airport (RDU) was also awarded the Honors Award for Engineering Excellence in 2006.

It was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and two awards by International Parking Institute.
